"OK, the funny thing about this story of a haunted house in Charleston is that the main characters talk about how their life seems to be similar to a Scooby Do cartoon, and they are so right! Everything about this story could make a great Scooby Do episode, except that the ghosts are real and they are haunting an old home in Charleston and they have secrets that need to be discovered in order to be laid to rest. This is a fun, easy read. Need that right now!!"
"I read this book because my mother loved it and thought I would too. Well, as the saying goes, Momma knows best. This book had a lot to offer. It was a mystery and a ghost story with a bit of romance thrown in. The story was interesting and kept moving. The conversations between some of the characters was fun. There were times a character would drive me to the point of wanting to scream at them for how blind they were being, but I have friends that do that to me too! I'll be anxiously waiting the next book. A big selling point for me was that this story was set in Charleston, SC. I am a SC girl who graduated from the Medical University of SC in Charleston so that location held a lot of appeal. The references to streets, bridges, parks and surrounding locations such as Isle of Palms, Mount Pleasant and Drayton Hall that were familiar to me made it easy for me to immerse myself in the story. I also love the combination of history and fiction so the Civil War and Depression era references just reeled me in more. I think Momma and I need a road trip to see if 55 Tradd Street really exists."
"This was a light, fun read that was elementally contained within the plan of the upcoming series; this being the first book. I enjoyed the variety provided by the nice balance of history, mystery, romance, and supernatural that takes place in the all too appropriate setting of historic Charleston, SC. The author does of good job of giving you a sampling of all that IS Charleston - its architecture, its history, its gardens, its cuisine, its surrounding areas, its college, its personality, its pride, its GHOSTS!! However, I'd say the humorous flirtation and banter between the main characters Jack and Mellie are what lend the read its most endearing quality. On the flip side, I was a little turned off by the fact that almost EVERYONE in the story could at some point & time hear or see ghosts. This cheapened it a bit for me. Also, everything came too easily to the main character Mellie - the house, the romance, the long lost family relations, the money, the answers, the friends, etc. More conflict for her would have been more interesting.
This is the first book I've read of Karen White's and in this book she seems to have a knack for writing "neatly", but not deeply. It was good, could have been better, but was good. I look foward to the sequel coming out in November 09'.
And oh yeah, it was pretty difficult reading about Mellie chowing down on fine Charleston cuisine such as shrimp, grits, coconut cream pie, fried chicken, corn bread covered with honey butter and on and on and on. I always seemed to stumble across these lines late at night while in the midst of the munchies which drove me crazy. I still have a notion to take a trip to Charleston (which happens to be my home town) so I can pound the haunted streets of the city and ravenously partake of every menu I come across. Yum, yum!"
"Melanie is a 39 year old realtor who inherits an old southern mansion, but can see dead people. Yea, but don't give up on the book yet! Somehow the author made it work and made it believable. Melanie begins to renovate the old house when Jack, the hunky guy enters the scene doing research for his next book. The setting of the book is Charleston and the descriptions of the city, the mansion, and the antique treasures are great. The book becomes a bit predictable about midway through, but all in all is a fun read. It is a bit romance, a bit mystery, and a bit gothic novel. Another book about Jack and Melanie will come out in Nov 09, and I look forward to reading it."
