"This is a likable, entertaining start to the Hannah Swensen cozy mystery series. We are introduced to her mother Delores, sister Andrea, brother-in-law Bill and little niece Tracey. We also meet Hannah's partner in The Cookie Jar Lisa, and several other folks from the small town of Lake Eden, Minnesota. Plus her one-eyed tomcat Moishe gets some attention in this book too.
Hannah's potential love interests, Norman Rhodes and Mike Kingston, are introduced here too. Toward the end of the book, Hannah's mother Delores (who is pressuring Hannah to get married at the `old' age of 29) happily claims that Hannah will be asked out by both men. Hannah doesn't think so, but sure enough, she winds up with two dates.
Plus we get seven cookie recipes in this book: Chocolate Chip Crunch Cookies, Regency Ginger Crisps, Pecan Chews, Black and Whites, Chocolate-Covered Cherry Delights, Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies and Lovely Lemon Bar Cookies (because the murderer is going to end up behind bars!).
"I should not have read other reviews of this book, before I did so I was reading along with only a slight nagging annoyance that I couldn't quite put my finger on. I'm not finished yet, but I will only be skimming the last 100 pages in order to find out who done it, I definitely won't be wasting my time with the other books in this series. Don't get me wrong, I love a cozy mystery & read lots of 'em, but why does the main character (if she's younger than 35) always fall into one of two types in this genre? She's either super hot with a hunky boyfriend or she's the stereotypical "old maid" (frumpy/not caring about her appearance and has one or more cats). Hannah falls into the latter category & it drove me crazy! I was afraid sometimes that she would start making out with Moshie!
Worse yet was how she seemed to be doing all the investigating AND interviewing of suspects! Now I know enough to take any give cozy mystery with a grain of salt, but this one was waaaaaay too unbelievable! What the heck is Bill (the cop) doing while Hannah is out solving this case?
Don't get me started on how the author details Hannah's EVERY move and the horrible dialogue where the characters use the name of the person they are speaking to 50 times per sentence!! No one talks like that!
Lastly. . .I just had a hard time believing she affords to make a living (especially afford a condo) when she owns a shop that only sells cookies & coffee. No small Midwestern town needs THAT many cookies & if they did, they'd all be 300 lbs.
"Hannah is a likable character in this first book in the Cookie Murder mystery series. In between her mother's set-ups and her sister's demands, Hannah has to run her cookie business and solve the murder of the local delivery man. I can just envision the small town and the townies (cast of characters). I was saddened when Ron, the delivery guy ended up dead as I had thought he would be a potential love interest. Not to worry, as Hannah's mom continually works on Hannah's love life and fixes her up on dates, much to Hannah's chagrin. It was great to see a bakery owner who was satisfied with her single, cookie filled life. The descriptions of the cookies sounded delectable, I cannot wait to try Regency Ginger Crisps. I will be reading the next in the series."
"I just finished Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder, and I was pleasantly entertained by the experience. From the beginning I felt like I was in the town of Lake Eden with Hannah - trying to figure out who the killer was right along with her. Since there are so many references to baking and Hannah's bakery and her cookies, I also felt like I wanted to be a bakery owner! The author described Hannah's bakery and her little town so well that I really feel like Lake Eden and the Cookie Jar are real places.
I just loved the characters and the story - I would never have guessed the killer - I was totally surprised when I turned the page and there the person was! I couldn't believe it, and you will be surprised too.
The CCCM book was so great that I went to the author's website and checked out all of the Hannah Swensen Mystery books she has written and I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series."
