About this title: For Durzo Blint, assassination is an art-and he is the city's most accomplished artist. For Azoth, survival is precarious. Something you never take for granted. As a guild rat, he's grown up in the slums, and learned to judge people quickly - and to take risks. Risks like apprenticing himself to Durzo Blint. But to be accepted, Azoth must turn his back on his old life and embrace a new identity and name. As Kylar Stern, he must learn to navigate the assassins' world of dangerous politics and strange magics - and cultivate a flair for death.

"Excellent fantasy novel! This is Brent Weeks' debut and a wonderful one at that. It's a very dark story, overall, that doesn't hold back on the child abuse, rape, poverty and other horrible things that happen in a city that is basically controlled by thieves and a weak king.
From all this muck comes Azoth, a guild rat who has aspirations to be more than what he is: poor, afraid, and weak. To do this, he risks everything to apprentice to Durzo Blint, one of the best paid killers in the city, if not the entire region. Azoth quickly leaves behind whatever childhood he managed to hold on to while living on the streets as he works to be what he always wanted to be: unafraid.
The assortment of characters are both appalling and endearing, jerking you around as you try to decide whether or not you like them as they move through the politics, intrigue and filth of their world all so that they can survive, from themselves and forces outside of their kingdom seeking to destroy them.
Weeks does not hold back and it's just so refreshing to read something that is both character and plot-driven. Everything is so rich and real as the characters interact with one another to come out on top - because that's the only way to stay alive. The power of human compassion and desire for survival is a theme that permeates throughout the entire series."
"I was introduced to this author and series by my youngest dd. Not only is it an addictive book, but the series itself has wrapped itself around my imagination and refuses to let go.
In the Author Interview Brent Weeks discussed the conflicted character and this is definitely a big part of the attraction that I had to both Durzo and Azoth (later Kylar). Just as in life there is no straight black-and-white rightness; just people in sometimes intolerable situations doing the best they can. And speaking of intolerable conditions! Whew... the characters are the poorest of the poor in a society where the only fortunate ones are those that are wealthy. Not in any way, shape or form can this be construed as anything light and airy... but don't let that deter you: The characters, the entire story, are extremely compelling and unforgettable. I can definitely see that this trilogy ~ and I've only read the first book so far ~ will become one of the "classics" of fantasy literature."
"I don't read a lot of epic fantasy because the books are so darn long, but the husband assured me Brent Weeks' Night Angels trilogy was great, so I read the first book, THE WAY OF SHADOWS. It wasn't just great, it was brilliant. Really, really brilliant. There were twists and turns, deaths around every corner, awesome, believable villains, and even a few love stories thrown in. I don't want to spoil anything, but there was this one scene where Weeks developed a love story between two secondary characters. In less than ten pages, I was hooked by their heartache. Oh, and there was plenty of tragedy in this book. I'm not a huge fan of tragedy. If an author kills off a main character I like, it's really hard for me to continue reading a series (which is why I no longer read George R. R. Martin :-) ), but this rule doesn't apply with Weeks books. He's good at killing characters. The right ones die the right way. Anyway, if you like epic fantasy at all, this should definitely be in your TBR stack."
"This was my first Brent Weeks novel. I'm not sure it was the best introduction to his work. It was a decent plot overall, with plenty of twists and turns. But before I go into more detail, the book was too slow.
Brent Weeks takes us to a place where life is dark, dreary, and deadly. Our main character begins his life on the streets, and the book constantly revisits them. Death abounds even upon children, innocents, royalty and the homeless. This world is one where everyone you befriend is a liability, every love a potential loss.
The darkness is not just around the characters but in them as well. Our protagonist has to make tough choices and does. Though at what cost? Can a young boy, even a tough one, take the leap from struggling in poverty to a powerful assassin and not lose part of his soul?
One thing I loved included the action scenes. The detail and flow of these was quite entertaining and drew me in fully. Sheer variety in weapons, attacks, and how each character approached the fights was worth the price of admission. Eric Lustbader eat your heart out. True ninja style stuff here.
Another strong point to this book is the depth of characterization. Weeks spared no amount of words making sure we understood each character, not just as their job or profession, but who they are inside and how they came to be there. He lets us peer into the mind of a prostitute turned leader, and a man who sold his soul for immortality.
Lastly a compliment to the author for making no one black and white. Not even characters as simple as some of the guards were entirely simple.
Though the book was long in the tooth at points, if you love tails of assassins, ninjas and the like, then this is a good read. Young adult is almost an unfair category for this as it will more likely appeal to a slightly older reader."
