Tim liked baseball, too, but hadn't been able to play much recently because he had been in and out of hospital so often. Since we didn't have a baseball to toss around, I found a pair of socks in Tim's dresser drawer and rolled them up tightly in a ball. For the rest of the evening we just sat playing catch across the room with socks. It was a wonderful visit. p102"
"Kevin Milne's first novel, The Paper Bag Christmas, is a sweet little volume that tugs on your heartstrings at the same time that it tickles your funnybone. The writing style is occasionally (rarely) a little awkward, but for a first novel it is relatively smooth and palatable. Without revealing too much, Milne writes of a nine-year-old boy and his brother who accept an offer they can't refuse from a mall Santa...the offer of "everything they never wanted for Christmas."
Soon, they find themselves accompanying Santa (an oncologist at the local hospital) to visit and befriend children in the oncology ward. Along the way they grow up a bit, and learn the truth that is all too rare at Christmastime -- that the season isn't all about them and how much loot they can get. That is a common theme in these kinds of seasonal books, but it is also a timeless and much needed lesson, and Milne's book does it good justice.
I suppose one reason I resonated with the story is because of my own occasional experiences visiting and reading to kids who were seriously ill at Utah Valley Hospital many years ago. Most of those experiences were light-hearted and fun, as they should have been. I recall one little boy, though who, the nurses said, had not spoken or smiled since he entered the hospital. I was overjoyed when I was able to get him laughing with my antics. And when I had to leave, and he began crying and wouldn't look at me, I was devastated. The look on his face has stayed with me for over thirty years. Such children need friends, and anything we who are so privileged can do to bring them our friendship and the gift of our time is worth a little sacrifice on our part."
"I loced this book. It reminds us of the real spirit of Christmas which is so hard to find in the hustle bustle of the season. it is the story of two brothers who want everything for Christmas and a Santa who says he will give them something wonderful that they didn't know they wanted if they would be his elves. Egual parts of comedy and tendermess make this a delight."
"This was such a tender beautiful Christmas story that really touched my heart. It reminded me of the true meaning of Christmas, one which I hope to teach my children someday."
