"I had to read this book for my Women's Studies class. I had never read any Maya Angelou before, aside from a poem or two, however I knew she was much revered in the world. So I was excited. Unfortunately, I found myself disappointed.
The letters were meant to be tidbits of wisdom and inspirational affirmations that Miss Angelou was writing to her daughter, and of course not having a daughter we are to take these letters to be written to the women of the world. Yet, many of Miss Angelou's words were judgmental, hypocritical and harsh. There were actually bits in the letters which talked about how women should dress, and encouraging other women to shame and berates women who did not dress according to standard. Part of me understands that Miss Aneglou came from another time, and that she is trying to instill knowledge about how to survive in the world. Even so, I found her advice to be on the side of blending in and not making a fuss. That one should abide by the societal roles that are in the world and should make sure those who don't are weeded out. This is atrocious.
I found no real wisdom or warmth in these letters. And after reading a poem by Miss Angelou in class entitled "Phenomenal Woman" I am even more turned off. The poem reduces women, yet again, to nothing more than body parts described in ways that are conventionally attractive. A woman is the sway of her hips, her smile, her eyes, yet nothing more. Miss Aneglou, please try again."
"With Mother's Day right around the corner, it seemed an ideal time to read Maya Angelou's Letter to My Daughter. I was intrigued by the notion of a woman who gave birth to one child, a son, writing a letter to her "thousands of daughters," who are "White, Jewish and Muslim, Asian, Spanish-speaking, Native American and Aleut.... fat and thin, pretty and plan, gay and straight, educated and unlettered," letters that contain "accounts of growing up, unexpected emergencies, a few poems, some light stories to make you laugh and some to make you meditate."
I should mention that until this book, I had never read any of Maya Angelou's writing other than the occasional poem or a quote that had been attributed to her. Now that I have read this, I am in total awe of the woman's writing, both her skill with words and the life and topics that she chooses to write about.
I cannot recommend this book enough and plan on seeking out more of Maya Angelou's work as soon as possible."
"Ever wanted inspiration after lunch, words of wisdom, life experiences with a point? Well read Maya Angelous's book of letters to the individuals out in the world because this is the exact book that'll settle your mind from the bumping bags in the hall way into serentity and bliss. (well maybe not all of that but some!) This book weere simply letters written to the reader to expose us to the truth of lives obstacles and needed finds. It lead syou into the way Angleous mind thinks and how she wants us to think as a strong inspirator of our world society. It binds us together, makes us think, and sometimes search for the examples given to us by Maya. I recommend this book, defintely not to everyone but to those who need a little wisdom from the hustling and hour glasses of the day.Be inspired dont be scared or run from this femine looking book or the fact that it makes you think. It will be an inspirational read. Please come find me if you'd like to read it I have it at home in my bookshelf."
"I once heard Maya Angelou read from her most famous book "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." Her presence is commanding her voice thick with empathy and deep understanding of life. She was in the looking back phase at that time and I was deeply moved by her insights. As a parting note she has penned a letter to the daughters she never had, whether they be black, white or a nice mocha color. My own mother's recent passing made her honest, soulful, revealing, unique well of ancient wisdom even more poignant. I was touched by her humility, stunned by the violence she endured, amazed at her many accomplishments, and emboldened by her brave stance. This is one daughter who is truly grateful she took the time to send a letter to me.
