About this title: There is a church not too far from us that recently added a $25 million addition to their building. Our local newspaper ran a front-page story not too long ago about a study revealing that one in five people in our city lives in poverty. This is a book about those two numbers.

"Another great book from Rob Bell in which he takes the reader back through the culture and history of the time in which the books of the bible were written, and uses that information to help place Christianity in a context. I always appreciate his books, with their emphasis on how Jesus' teachings should influence Christians in the here and now, rather than have them be focused on the afterlife. My only complaint is his endnote style--he puts such interesting information in the endnotes, but I have to flip back and forth all the time."
"I was prepare to dislike this book. Based on some of the early language I was afraid it would end up being a call to "social justice" activism of the sort the religious left promotes or maybe even a sort of liberation theology.
But even though at times it felt on the edge of this kind of thinking (the social justice part) it never ended up "going there." Instead it was an interesting call to better understand how the Old Testament connects to the Gospel and what that should mean for us today.
It is a call to love and sacrificial giving; to thinking and acting in ways that prevent entitlement and stagnation; that hears the cry of the poor and oppressed rather than focus on our own comfort and power. I think this is a true and necessary message.
I did find the sort of avant-garde or trendy style of the book (most paragraphs being a sentence or two; words arranged in staccato bursts like poetry; etc.) off putting. It just made the book harder to read for me. But I have a feeling the style fits Rob Bell's speaking style and so his rhythm. And it seems like a silly thing to complain about, but for a book that worries about churches selling a product or trying to be trendy this packaging and marketing feels a little hypocritical. Maybe to the authors it doesn't feel like being cool or trendy but to me it came off that way"
"Mr. Bell continues to write books with a clear message that is easy to read and very thought provoking. This book deals with empires -- from physical/political ones to spiritual ones. He outlines the dangers of empires and the what happens when the oppressed forget what oppression is like and become the oppressors.
Mr Bell delivers a warning to Americans, specifically Christians in America. My only beef with this book is that while it outlines the attack on the empires in this country, there isn't a lot of time spent on how to 'combat' the empire other than vague warnings to help the 'widows, orphans, and aliens'. Perhaps that is not his reason for writing, but I would have found the what-to-do portion beneficial."
"Interesting thoughts here about the state of exile, how the U.S. is on the "empire" track of many of the great nations in history and how it's not a great place to be. My favorite part was when he described the temple how the closer we get to the inner sanctum of the temple in the O.T., the closer to God people were, i.e. the court of the Gentiles, the Court of Israel and ultimately the Holy of Holies. He then talked about how when Christ died, the curtain between the Holy of Holies and the rest of the temple was torn indicating that there is no barrier now between us and God. Good stuff."
