"quick read. i could understand how anne rice felt growing up catholic and attending mass each sunday. although i didn't go to catholic school, i could emppathize with the religious pressure and the yearning to rebel. with anne rice, someone told her she couldn't live a different life than one of her catholic upbringing. in attempts to prove him wrong, she left the church for many years. interesting that, even before i knew about anne rice's life, i could feel her struggle with religion in her novels--and she validated my feelings in this memoir.
my daughter is preparing for her first reconiciliation and first eucharist this year. i keep in mind not to pressure her and to let her develop her own beliefs...i feel this book inspires me to continue to build a family life where there is no need to have strong yearning to rebel...hoping she doesn't lose her way... :-)"
"I loved this book for several reasons. I've always liked Anne Rice but at some point, got tired of the vampire stories and stopped reading her books. This book was a pleasure to read - Anne Rice has recalled a series of events in her own personal life - interesting in themselves - that have led her to her new state, written in her own recognizable style. As a Christian, I would recommend it as a compelling affirmation of belief. She gives actual reasons for her conversion, based on historical study and research. I liked this approach and found it a good tool in my own life. I gave this book four stars out of five because I really didn't sense a direction until I was about a third of the way through the book. Luckily, I didn't put it down."
"I've never read an Anne Rice novel. (I did collect the Interview w/a Vampire comics for a while, but that was a long time ago.) So I don't come to this spiritual memoiras a fan.
I'm not a Roman Catholic, either... though the book is about a person's journey from Catholic faith to atheism & back to Catholicism.
So my review/response to this book is colored by these things.
Here's the bullet points: - the structure of the book is rambling... and that's being charitable. While individidual passages are brilliantly written, they're set in a rickety framework that feels like it is threatening to collapse at any moment. - it's very interesting to watch spiritual conversion inside another "branch" of Christianity. The emotional content & the basic theology is similar; the trappings & traditions are unfamiliar (esp. to a kid who grew up inside a conservative evangelical Protestant church.) - the last chapter of the book (her "suggestion" about rewriting Catholic doctrine about marriage & sexuality) feels tacked on.
In closing: interesting read at times that suffers from shoddy editing."
"I was curious about this book when I heard that Anne Rice, an atheist for 40 years, had returned to the Catholic faith of her childhood.
You Catholics or former Catholics out there might really enjoy her descriptions of growing up Catholic in New Orleans (or maybe your mothers would enjoy it even more!). Her writing is lush and evocative. By chance, I came across the audio version of this book just as we were setting off on a long road trip, so I listened to it instead of reading it. And I think that was fortuitous because all through the book, Rice talks about what a horrible reader she was and how she experienced life visually and auditorily. I think that's probably what makes her a good writer--that she writes how she experiences life.
This book is focused on her childhood experience of Catholicism, her total rejection of faith, and then her eventual return to faith and the Catholic Church pretty much in spite of herself.
Since then, she has abandoned the vampire books that made her famous and has instead begun a series of novels on the life of Christ. And I read, too, that she has a new book coming out next month that is about angels, with maybe similar sensibilities as her vampire books.
I really liked this book. I suspect that I might not have been quite as captivated if I'd read it, so I recommend getting the audio version if you can get your hands on it. I got mine from our library.
As a side note, I've never read ANY of Anne Rice's work before this. I think whatever ideas I had about the vampire chronicles were what I picked up generally from the media. Her descriptions of these novels, however, were interesting, especially in terms of what they reveal about the author and her attempt to make sense of life as well as how they were received within the larger culture."
