"This is a fun read, capturing lots of things I've been thinking about as I find myself surrounded by lots of white folks here in an urban setting. It's a satirical guide for us non-whites to "their" world.
I find much truth in entries such as no. 42 Sushi; no. 53 Dogs; no. 72 Study Abroad; and no. 145 Cheese. Especially cheese. I could go on and on about my realization that some people have an "extensive and deep knowledge of cheese." Wow. Growing up where my cheese options were limited to sliced or not sliced, you can imagine my dumbfound expression every time I'm faced with a food situation involving obscure cheese choices. Needless to say, my cheese recognition skills are highly underdeveloped.
The eye-opening thing for me is when I see things in Stuff White People Like that I actually like or have done. Like no.121 Reusable Shopping Bags; no.39 Netflix; no.15 Yoga; and no.29 80's Night. It's to be expected that I've embraced things that I've discovered in my journeys away from home. And who doesn't love an 80's Night? Come on, that one crosses lots of boundaries. :)
I think the fun of this book is finding yourself in the entries, and being able to laugh at some of the ridiculous things we like and why we like them. Some critics have said that this book most resembles a social class rather than a race of people. This is probably true. It's more of a Stuff Middle Class/Upper Middle Class People Like. Or, now that I've read Rise of the Creative Class, it could be Stuff the Creative Class likes.

"How I Came To Read This Book: Someone gave it to Jordan as a Christmas gift and I stole it, after three tough literary fiction reads, I needed a break.
The Plot: Christian Lander and his cohorts run a blog on the very topic the title states the book is about - Stuff White People Like. Of course, it's a certain 'kind' of white person - generally American hipsters that like to believe they're the first and only person to do or like something. The book covers 150 slightly baffling / amusing elements of so-called 'white culture' and works as a bit of a field guide for 'non-white' people. Of course, just as The Office is "funny because it's racist" so is this book.
The Good & The Bad: Overall this is a laugh out loud book that is fun and painfully accurate - sometimes hitting a bit close to home admittedly. The average reader should be able to pick out someone that is interested in just about every item in the book, my entire workplace is basically summarized in these 200 pages. There's also fun little flowcharts and quizzes to test your whiteness or to help you figure out what white people name their kids. Despite its short length, this is a book best enjoyed in small bouts to appreciate the humour and brevity of Lander's entries. Additionally, I am slightly irritated with the fact the book is 'so' ironic in that the very culture and people it disdains are clearly its target audience. When you're being sold in the books section of Urban Outfitters you've achieved the ultimate white person goal - pinnacle of pretentiousness. So congrats to the author - I enjoyed the book, even if he's getting the last laugh.
The Bottom Line: A laugh out loud read enjoyed in bits and pieces. Perfect for white people's coffee table books
Anything Memorable?: HAH. One of my coworkers VERBATIM gave the exact white person explanation for why they pirate music mere hours after reading that entry. "It either goes in my pocket or the corporation's, and I support the bands anyway by attending their concerts and buying merch, that's the only way they make money anyway." Really? Really.
