"Really enjoyed this book, easy to read, lots of photos to illustrate ideas and floor plans to help demonstrate. A worthy read for anyone thinking of building or remodeling."
"Thank goodness someone is addressing the problems with McMansions. Oh if only we could convince more Americans they don't need all that excess space."
"Don't know when I became interested in the architecture and decoration of homes, but I remember week after week reading the floorplan page in our Sunday paper as a kid. When I got older I discovered architecture and decorating books and I was hooked.
Sarah Susanka is one of my favorite writers of this genre. She specializes in small space homes. I hasten to affirm I have never been able to afford even these small spaces, most of my money went on books and travel, but I have always dreamed and built houses in my head."
"Our recent home purchase and subsequent destruction (and soon to be remodeling) of said home made me very excited to receive this highly recommended book on loan from a friend of Sue's. I dove into it the first night and read almost the entire book in a couple of quick days. However, then real life work on my house got in the way and the book was put on the back burner for a few weeks. I finally finished it not long ago and found the book to be highly informative and very interesting.
I was instantly drawn to the large, attractive photographs, and the clear, concise language Sarah Susanka uses to describe and illustrate the structure of the smaller homes featured in the book helped make a very unfamiliar topic (to me!) very relatable. Susanka writes about the value of the carefully designed not so big house as it compares to typically desired larger homes, and highlights what smaller homes can offer that are often missed in larger houses- a feeling of coziness and intimacy, a place of comfort. Susanka sings the praises of usable, comfortable space designed uniquely for it's inhabitants. I enjoyed this book so much that I have purchased another of Sarah Susanka's books, Inside the Not So Big House. I look forward to reading that one as Nathan and I approach the time to decorate our new house!
While this book was a wonderful read, it is not a book to read if you are wanting to save money by building a smaller house. Susanka encourages homeowners to use the money they would have put into a bigger house to personalize a smaller home, and the special touches that add that special style and individuality do not come cheap!"
