"I enjoyed this book quite a bit, but in different ways than I expected. A lot of it was more memoir than neurological study of music (see Levitin's previous THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON MUSIC for a great dose of that). While it wasn't exactly what I expected, it was very well written and did still have a lot of discussion of the way different types of song (the six songs of the title are not individual songs but types of songs) have impacted human development. Good stuff that taught me quite a few things I did not know (cats cover their feces for bacteria reasons, I always thought it was to hide it from predators). It also reminded me of many great songs I hadn't listened to in a long while."
"This was an airport bookstore buy on a day that I had a long time to wait. I think I was seduced by the promise of the author's first book, "This is Your Brain on Music." I've never read it but it sounded great, and this was by the same guy. I don't know what part of "How the Musical Brain Created Human Nature" didn't scream "EVOLUTION" to me but somehow I missed that subtlety (okay, I just missed that subtitle altogether). This book is entertainingly written, includes interviews with a studiously varied cross-genre collection of musicians (Levitin's cool points, nicely played), and seems to be well-researched. But the entire point of the book is how evolution has shaped the human's capacity for making and responding to music. It's not that I'm anti-evolution (even though it still makes my stomach feel funny to type that...sorry Nana). It's just that I'm way too self-centered to enjoy reading a book that explains away my love for music by saying it is just something that evolved in humans as a result of years of natural selection. I don't know, after rereading that it doesn't sound nearly so offensive but I just kept myself feeling annoyed about it the entire time I was reading this thing. And, he lost pretty much all credibility with me near the beginning when he took credit for dreaming about a guru saying the hokey pokey is what it's all about. Come on now...that isn't YOUR dream, Daniel Levitin, that's been going around the internet for years and I think Steven Wright might be the first person I ever heard ask "What if the hokey pokey really IS what it's all about?" Or maybe I dreamed that.
I do still want to read This is Your Brain on Music, so I guess he wins."
"I was excited to read this after reading his "This is Your Brain on Music," which I really liked. I was in a waiting area as I began reading this and someone nearby noted that he had recently read it. His comment was that he was disappointed in it and wished that it had been more about music. I agree. This is an attempt to look at the interaction of music with enculturation, but it feels more like an excuse to ruminate on ideas the author has that can be interesting, but just didn't have any impact."
"Daniel Levitin has the neck of looking at music in an anthropological simplicity.
It reminds us all how important music is to our lives, and what a great gift it is."
