"This is an anthology containing 25 short stories. One surprise for me is how explicit the sex scenes are in nearly all of the stories. I'm not familiar with the romance genre but had assumed that they the stories would focus on fantasizing rather than fantasy fulfilled meaning it's not a fantasy any more. It seems a vampire's life is you look at someone and you barely have time to make it to a bed, screaming and groaning orgasms, and then the vampire bites a very happy and willing partner leading to even more and better orgasms. At some points I felt that the anthology could have been titled "The Mammoth Book of Vampire Sex." The good news is I liked all of the stories and there are some sweet romances where the characters flirt including a couple that don't end in sex.
Here's a sampling of comments on my favorite stories.
"The Righteous" by Jenna Maclaine - Set in a medieval era where vampires rule and a couple remains committed to a cause. I also liked it as it put men and women on an equal footing. I'd put this as one of the more romantic stories simply as they remain true to one another.
"Viper's Bite" by Delilah Devlin -While it starts out the same as usual with the male vampire stalking a human woman, ten pages of flirting, four pages of sex, but then a nice twist that seals this as a romance. Forget-me-not would have been a fitting title.
"Dancing with the Star" by Susan Sizemore -The story includes a ghoul too. Good humor, excellent romance.
"In Which a Masquerade Ball Unmasks an Undead" by Colleen Gleason - The leading characters flirt throughout the entire story while also weaving through a complicated plot that involving warring factions.
"A Temporary Vampire" by Barbara Emrys - Vampire romance with a sweet ending. He flirts with her. She's not sure but when given a chance to turn the tables on him she realizes he's a keeper.
"The Midday Mangler Meets His Match" by Rachel Vincent - Not a romance at all but instead is a twist on the old children's tales about the boogey man in the dark."
"There are 25 short stories but 23 authors. Of the 8 authors I had read before, 5 of the stories I thought were great, the other 3 were bad. Of the 17 authors I had never read, it was a great introduction to them. 10 I liked, 7 I didn't. Overall I liked more than I didn't but it was a close call. Would recommend for people wanting to read new authors."
