"Although she is a princess of Egypt, well schooled and beautiful, because of her roots, Nefertari is basically sneered by all around her. Throughout childhood, besides only a few others very close to her, Ramesses, prince of Egypt is one of her closest friends.
But the years pass and at the age of 17 it is time for Ramesses to become coregent of Egypt, and soon he will have to take a wife. The woman of choice--as far as the people of Egypt are concerned--is Iset.
Iset is a true seductress. Physically stunning, charming and loved by the people. Whereas, Nefertari is barely 14, talks too much, is far from adored by the people, and hasn't fully grown in to her body. And so, Ramesses marries Iset and Nefetari is left longing for something she doesn't believe she'll ever have.
But soon enough, Nefetari comes in to her own. Her beauty, her wit and her love for Ramesses inevitably steal his heart, and regardless of what his people say about her, he takes her as his second wife. Although passionate, it isn't just a physical relationship between them. Ramesses trusts and respects Nefertari like no other, and soon, she becomes one of his closest confidants.
Yet, with all Nefertari had managed to accomplish, still there are obstacles to overcome. Ramesses will soon have to choose a First Wife. The one woman he would hold above all others. The Queen of Egypt. Iset is undoubtedly the people's first choice. Hated for crimes she didn't commit, not only must Nefertari convince Ramesses she should be the Queen, but the people of Egypt as well.
The Heretic Queen is told in the first person from Nefertari's POV, and I thought that Michelle Moran did a wonderful job of portraying her. I have to give credit to this author, she really wrote a wonderful tale. Not to mention, it is more than obvious that she really did some research. Or, at least, as much as could be done about a couple who lived so long ago.
I REALLY enjoyed reading this tale and as soon as I have a spare second, I will be reading both Nefertiti and Cleopatra's Daughter.
"The Heretic Queen is the sequel to Nefertiti. Having read Nefertiti and liking it but not being completely captured by it I didn't rush out to get Heretic. So I was completely surprised with Heretic because it immediately captured my attention. Nefertari, Ramesses, Asha, and Worsoret are very alive characters and this part of of Egyptian history is very interesting. Plus since the idea of having more than one wife is foreign it is fun to read about wives that are dueling for the attention of the husband and the lengths they will go to show up the other. I also enjoyed the power war between Ramesses' two aunts."
"Moran, Michelle. 2008. The Heretic Queen. Crown Publishers. 381 pages.
I am sure that if I sat in a quiet place, away from the palace and the bustle of the court, I could remember scenes from my childhood much earlier than six years old.
Set during the Nineteenth Dynasty, The Heretic Queen is a wonderfully absorbing novel of love, ambition, greed, hope, and redemption. Our heroine is the young Nefertari, daughter of Mutnodjmet and General Nakhtmin. Her life had tragic beginnings, no doubt, her entire family being killed--some would even say murdered. She's sheltered by the current pharoah, true, but for how long? What is her place in this royal court, this royal family? Raised alongside Ramesses II, she has secretly been dreaming of marrying him. But unlike her ill-fated, too-ambitious aunt, Nefertiti, she's not dreaming of the crown and thrown. She's dreaming of the man. But there are great powers at work in this dysfunctional family and court who would do anything to prevent her from that match. (The High Priest of Amun, Rahotep, and Henuttawy, the high priestess of Isis and the pharoah's own sister.) Fortunately for Nefertari, there are people desiring her to win Ramesses' heart and claim the title of queen. (Woserit, the high priestess of Hathor and the pharoah's other sister; and Paser, a wise teacher and advisor).
I loved this book. It's rich in detail, fine in characterization, and magnificent in scope. I loved the love and romance between Ramesses and Nefertari. I did. I don't think you have to love romance to love the book. I think it will appeal to anyone who loves history and historical fiction."
