"Easy to read non-fiction story about an Kenyan woman who returns to her country and standups to land-developers who are destroying Kenya's forests. She recruits other women who help plant trees while bravely facing the strength of commercial adversity. Good book for young girls."
"This is the story of Wangari Maathai a Kenyan woman, environmentalist and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Concerned by the deforestation of her homeland, Wangari leads a movement to replant the trees of Kenya
"Wangari is a little girl living in Africa. She goes to study in America and when she comes back, the trees are gone. Wangari convinces the other women to help her plant trees . Wangari is strong, even when people doubt her actions. It's an interesting story in conservation and women's rights. It's also a simplified story of a Nobel Peace Prize winner. Even though there are serious issues discussed, the story is simple enough that young children can understand the events and importance of her work. The illustrations are very flat and colorful, with interesting points of view (like views from above)."
"This is a nicely-told true story of a young woman in Kenya who made a difference by planting trees. When Wangari was a young girl there were trees all around her. She left Kenya for six years and came back to realize that so many trees had been cut down and none were being planted. So she decided to start a movement and eventually became a Nobel prize-winning environmentalist.
The book is simple and cute. The pictures are bright and colorful and I liked that they didn't reinforce stereotypes. There's also a page at the back of the book that gives a more traditional biographical account of Wangari's life. I'd definitely read this to kids if I wanted to inspire them to care about the environment a bit more. This would probably be a hit right around Earth Day, especially with the younger crowd!"
