About this title: This study is an account of how a unit of average middle-aged Germans became the cold-blooded murderers of tens of thousands of Jews. Browning tells about such Germans, and helps the reader to understand, not only what they did to make the Holocaust happen, but also how they were transformed psychologically, from the ordinary men of the title into active participants in the most monstrous crime in human history.

"Painful to read but I asked myself many hard questions because of it. You must decide to act based on what you know is right, regardless of what others around you will say or do. "Everyone else was doing it" is an utterly puerile argument."
"Can't imagine why i haven't rated this one before because it's a five star classic. I read it years ago and although it's short it turned my head around. One of the great essential books on the Holocaust. This is not about the camps, this is about the extermination of Jews in Poland before they built Treblinka, Belzec and Sobibor. Who took these Jewish families into the forests and gunned them down? Turns out it wasn't the steely-eyed fanatical SS at all, it was middle-aged police reserve guys, your local baker, pharmacist or gardener who was a bit too old and pudgy to have been conscripted into the army. Just your regular guys. Oh yes, and if they found it too disturbing, shooting men women and children in cold blood week after week, they could ask to be transferred to other duties and that was okay.
"I had to read this book for a class and it is a great look at how "ordinary men" volunteered to take part in some of the most gruesome and horrific events of the Third Reich. Focuses not only on the killing of the Polish Jews but the Ukrainian Jews as well. Heartwrenching but very informative."
