"As usual, Bushnell writes about a most eclectic group of people, all money hungry, selfish, greedy, promiscuous and never satisfied with what they have. The most normal character in the book was an adolescent boy. Everybody has more money than they know what to do with it, but never enough. I was both appalled and entranced. It was like reading porn. Is utterly pointless, but you cannot put it down. You have two men that think with their lower body organs instead of their actual head, a woman that will sleep with whomever to live in a particular building, an actress that is weary of lying in the bed she made, a mom with a married life very similiar to the rest of us folks, an old busy body, and of course, a possibly gay fellow. And let us not forget the filthy rich and high and mighty upstairs. This book follows their lives and it is shocking how their choices and situations entwine. I could not put it down. Bushnell somehow does it again. There is quite possibly a moral in this novel. "Treat others as you would like to be treated.." OR "Be nice to a fellow today cause he may be your boss tomorrow." One never knows who will rise above or fall below. You may be pleasantly surprised."
"Well, it is what it is - mindless chick lit. If that's what you're looking for, read it. It's a story of the interworkings of NY socialite and socialite-wanna-be life. It was read-able... but definitely isn't a book to read if you're trying to broaden your horizons."
"I was torn with this one...maybe it was closer to two stars....the story was a cute idea and once I was about half way in I could place everyone and everything with a little more clarity. For some reason the flow was off. Understanding all the people in the building, their history and where the plot was to take you just felt hard, the flow was a little rough. I thought at times it felt a little busy with....blah blah blah...Shiffer said...blah blah...Lola said....too many so and so "said" ending each sentence in various conversations made it hard to read. Almost as though we couldn't follow along with who and to whom the characters were speaking with. It may have been easier for me with a little more description of their facial expressions or gestures to define who was who in the conversation...I did like the story, just was a rough ride to the end."
"I loved HBO's adaptation of "Sex and the City", but until now I had never read a book by Candace Bushnell. After reading "One Fifth Avenue" I wish I hadn't waited so long. She's a gifted writer, seamlessly blending vibrant characters and an engaging storyline with social critique. One fifth avenue is the address of an exclusive New York City building, and each of the characters in this story has a particular relationship with it. Lola Fabrikant, a recent college graduate who's greatest desire is having money and hobnobbing with the famous, believes living in the building will bring her one step closer to fame, while Philip Oakland, a Pulitzer prize winning author, has lived in the building his entire life and takes his privileged lifestyle for granted. Then there is Mindy Gooch, who lives in what used to be one fifth's servants quarters - it was the best she and her husband could afford, but she never stops envying the wealth of other residents and wishing she too could live a life of luxury. She has a particularly explosive relationship with Paul Rice, a hedge fund manager who recently came into money and harbors a tremendous sense of entitlement, despite his wife's best efforts to reign him in. Altogether the characters in this book are richly complex - they challenge you to question your own beliefs about money, fame and what it means to live a meaningful life in a materialistic society."
