"Elizabeth Peters has finally decided to add a new volume to the Vicky Bliss series. Vicky, art historian / Assistant Curator of Munich's National Museum, always seems to find herself in job related, chaotic situations. Last seen in 1984, Vicky (and her gang) were first introduced in 1973. As is only possible in fiction, Vicky is still in her early thirties and still involved with former art thief John Tregarth (formerly known as Sir John Smythe). Their friend Feisal, the Inspector of Antiquities for Upper Egypt, arrives unexpectedly and informs them of the theft of King Tut's mummy from its tomb in the Valley of the Kings. The bad news is that John is the prime suspect. From this point on Vicky and friends, including her overly inquisitive boss Schmidt, set off on a whirlwind search beginning in Europe and ending in the Egyptian desert to recover Tut's remains and clear John's name."
"This is the latest (and likely last) of the Vicky Bliss novels from Peters. In this one, Vicky once again takes her show on the road with John, Schmidt, and Feisal when they learn that King Tut's mummy has been stolen and John is the prime suspect. A lot of wacky behavior and some excellent deductions finally lead them to the mastermind behind the theft, and reveal that John is actually a descendant of the great Dr. Emerson and Amelia Peabody. Wonderful way to tie the series to the Peabody series!"
"I loved reading "romantic suspense" novels from the 1960s-1980s. Elizabeth Peters (aka Barbara Michaels) is one of my favorite authors in that genre. She is best known for her Amelia Peabody mystery series, about a Victorian lady who marries an egyptologist (I loved Crocodile on the Sandbank), but my favorite has always been the Vicky Bliss series by Peters. Laughter of Dead Kings is the latest in this series (the first book was published in 1973 and the last in 1994). In Laughter, Vicky is still in her early 30s, but the book is set in the present day (Peters in her intro. to the book admits to poetic license in doing this). Nearly 6-ft. tall, blonde and voluptous, Vicky is a medieval art scholar and the assistant curator at the National Museum of Munich, Germany. In previous adventures, she matched wits with art thief Sir John Smythe. The two became lovers, and Smythe is now running a legitimate art business in London - or so Vicky thinks. In this book, a famous artifact is stolen in Egypt and John is thought to be the thief. He and Vicky set out to clear his name. Vicky's boss, the lovable Herr Schmitt, comes along for the ride. The book is filled with humorous banter between the characters as they work to uncover the mystery. I don't think the plot was quite as good as some of the other books in the series, but it was really fun to reconnect with these characters."
"I was in the middle of re-reading Vicky Bliss #5 when I read this - let me just say that I was so glad to get back to re-reading it. It was a big disappointment. Since all the characters cooperate and work together, the tension and struggles that existed in all the previous novels is gone. The mystery itself is flat and uninteresting as well. It seems like the author just had fun putting together lots of characters from the previous 5 novels, excepting Max (who is of course, my favorite!). I am sad - this was one of my favorite characters. It would've been nice to look forward to more novels with her."
