Description: New. 030681790X Brand New Book, never read-tracking In the early morning hours of October 24, 1944, the legendary U.S. Navy submarine Tang was hit by one of its own faulty torpedoes. The survivors of the explosion struggled to stay alive one hundred-eighty feet beneath the surface, while the Japanese dropped deadly depth charges. "Why had I never heard this amazing story of the submarine Tang. Incredibly successful in WWII in sinking Japanese ships, she was tragically hit by one of her own torpedos and sunk. How anyone escaped was a miracle : and the first time anyone did."
"Really interesting story. It provides a different view on WWII than what I had read before. Most books focus on the war in Europe. This focuses on the Pacific side, and it also tells the story of a submarine crew, which I didn't know much about. It gets pretty intense when you get to the actual escape, made even more intense when you consider that the whole story is true! This book would make a great movie!"
"This was a rather short glimpse into the "Silent Service" in the Pacific during WWII, giving just a little taste of what life was like on an old diesel submarine while detailing the events during the last tour of the SS Tang--what's still considered the most successful battle record of any US submarine. Part of what made this last tour so astounding was the fact that 9 men of the nearly 90 officers and crew managed to escape and survive after the boat was struck and sunk by one of its own malfunctioning torpedoes.
I've read another book by this author, The Few (about American volunteers flying during the Battle of Britain) and The Longest Winter (The Battle of the Bulge). His style is simple, if a bit repetative at times, but manages to keep the story compelling while at the same time providing enough details to make you appreciate the entire situation.
My father was a submariner who started his career in the 1950s aboard one of those same diesel boats that had seen action in the War (SS Atule), so it's fascinating to me to compare some of his old stories with what I read here. Although he reads far more detailed and techincal books than this one, I think he'll appreciate the more human side presented in this book."
"Kershaw hits the nail on the head with this riveting account of The Tang and its crew.
What they endured and how they did it, is absolutely astonishing. It makes you feel like you were there with them. The actual accounts form those who were left, leave nothing to the imagination. If you are an avid WWII reader, you need to read this!"
