"Its probably good Cowboys fans didn't know all these stories as they were happening. Most of the luster would have worn off much faster from the "Team of the 90's".
Jimmy Johnson is a real prick. He cuts a guy for falling asleep in a meeting. That same guy was tired b/c his newborn was suffering some sort of ailment that prevented him from getting much sleep.
Jerry Jones is the single biggest reason the Cowboys haven't returned to the Super Bowl. Time and time again you see his terrible player/coach decision making poorly effecting the team.
Emmitt Smith is probably a big ass. He comes off well in public, but only b/c its about him.
I don't hold those players on a pedestal anymore. They all behaved terribly, set poor examples, and should have done far more with their talent then they did.
"Whatever. It did a lot of things...none well at all. It wasn't salacious enough, didn't delve deeply enough into the tactical aspect of the Cowboys' reign, didn't attempt to mine the personalities of the players, coaches and owner to make some sort of conclusion about their success, or success on the football field in general, or just plain ol' success.
And what a hack this guy is. Jesus Christ. Sportswriting by someone who can actually WRITE (Updike, Ford and King to name three off the top of my head) is rare and precious. This book was a waste of my time but I am very happy that I, unlike a couple million American men, didn't pay $26.00 to do so."
"I really enjoy the books Jeff Pearlman writes. This is one about my beloved Dallas Cowboys. He starts the book when Jerry Jones buys the Cowboys and fires Tom Landry hiring Jimmy Johnson to coach the team. This was in 1989 and the Cowboys went 1-15. The book covers their glory years when they won three Super Bowls in four years from 1992-1995. He tells the behind the scenes stories about the drugs, the women, the parties and the football. No one comes out unscathed in this book. All the way from the owner to the players who were cut early on-the Cowboys were not very likeable. Jones was a rich football idiot who hired a coach, Jimmy Johnson, who had an ego the size of Texas. They went form allegedly buddies to hating each other in five years. They also won two Super Bowls. After Jones fired Johnson he hired Barry Switzeer and the wild Cowboys became the completely out of control Cowbooys. They also won another Super Bowl.
Michael Irvin was a drug taking player who cheated on his wife all the time. It does tell how he turned his life around after he retired and brought his ego under control. Emmitt Smith was also ego driven but a hard worker. Troy Aikmen comes out best in the book along with Jay Novecek. It was fun to see what the players were really like but that is also a little desillusional.
Another good quick read from Pearlman. I am looking forward to reading his next book about Roger Clemens."
"If you are a (American) football fan, this is an excellent read. You will read of the 1990's Dallas Cowboys from a whole new perspective. It's an ugly scandalous side which you would be ashamed to tell your mother.
If you hated the Dallas Cowboys of the 1990's, you will find a lot of reasons to hate them ever so much more. As a teenager, I cheered this team on and I feel dirty and cheated now.
Jeff Pearlman tells a good story. He gives life .. a story ... to people wearing a jersey number and star on their helmet. It's a story about the Dallas Cowboys ... but also of us. If the world hands you everything on a platter, what kind of person do you become?"
