"After reading City of Thieves I really wanted to read Benioff's other book. Again a very quick, engaging read. Again, the situations are a bit larger than life, but the characters feel very real. I had heard it had a really dark ending, so I actually found it to not be as bleak as I'd expected. Although on second thought, is goading your best friend into unleashing years of buried hostility by beating you into a pulp so you don't get excessively raped in prison really that much cheerier than a simple suicide?"
""The 25th Hour" is a novel that reads more like a short story or novella. David Benioff's writing is incredibly descriptive, sometimes uncomfortably so. It's a quick read, and one of those stories where it's hard to like any of the characters but you still care what happens to them. The story is set in New York. A group of friends prepare to see on of their number go off to jail for seven years. All of the action takes place in a very short window of time, or in flashbacks. The characters' world is presented in a very believable way, which impressed me because their world is so different from the one in Benioff's later novel "City of Thieves.""
