"WTKF? That's a quote from "Parks & Recreation." But I thought it fitting.
This is some dark, crazy stuff that seems like a no-holds barred, first blood wrestling match. Don't eff with the Preacher, or his grandma, or his girlfriend, or his blood-sucking friend, or . . . you get the point. Actually, I should have stopped with the wrestling match, because that's accurate. You don't know what's going to happen, but since you know it's planned you feel completely safe in its ability to entertain you. Of course, there's more brain work to be done here. It's not as throwaway as a wrestling match, and with the hunt for God thrown in, it is a little weightier than who will become the World Heavyweight champ."
""Gone to Texas" collects the first seven issues of Garth Ennis' excellent Preacher series. The story begins with the reverend Jesse Custer, his estranged girlfriend Tulip and a mysterious Irishman named Cassidy sitting together and talking in an anonymous American diner. Jesse is on a quest to find God and take Him to task for abandoning His creation, while Tulip is on the run from a past she refuses to discuss. Cassidy seems to be just along for the ride, but he has his own dark secrets. Ennis's writing is sharp, clever and harshly, caustically, hilariously cutting in it's commentary. Steve Dillon's art is top notch, the characters are strong and active, the visual punchlines are hilarious while the gross-out moments are truly gross. This is definitely intended for mature audiences. Highly recommended for all fans of graphic novels and awesome things."
"Oh Wow! I can review graphic novels! Yay! So I read this because I was at an interview of a director named Enis.. he brought up the comic author that has his same name and said the series was good... the people interviewing didn't hire him but I took the tip -Forbidden Planet was so very close by... and it has been some real fun buying and reading this series;its fan base is SO fervent. On the subway the geeks just cant help themselves, "You're reading Preacher! Oh that is so Awesome! And your a girl!" Wow. Finally I'm a part of a club. As to the comic; I have these friends that are obsessed with Steven King whom I cant deal with because he's too steeped in coarse and crass (seemingly just for the sake of it?) This series is close to that but somehow not so self indulgent. Or maybe just talk bubbles don't go on as much as text, hard to say but this IS good comics. I love the vampire that just holes up under a tarp in the back of his pick up truck for daytime hours. I love that Preachers eyes turn red when he calls forth The Word of God (red eyes = good, like Swampthing). I love that the main character is not just lost in the women eliminating never never land of eternal staghood but has a relationship (again - like Swampthing). I love that the woman in his life is older and kinda trashy but proud, angry and not marginalized. Story? Well... I dont know, there were a lot of guns and ummm police... in the South... coulda been an episode of The Dukes of Hazards if there'd been a General Lee. Failed to make an impression BUT I bought the next one. Somehow, for me, these are delightful. We'll see what happens next."
"One of my favorite comic book series of all-time. It's dark, extremely offensive, but compulsively readable. This first collection of PREACHER serves to introduce our hero (?) Jesse Custer, the love of his life Tulip, an Irish vampire named Cassidy, the brutal Saint of Killers, and, of course, the ever-loving Arseface (must be seen to be believed).
The story revolves around Jesse's breakdown as a preacher and his possession by an entity called Genesis (the product of an angel and demon's unholy love affair). Soon Jesse meets up with his old girlfriend Tulip and a vampire named Cassidy. Hot on their trail is the ruthless Saint of Killers, sent by the angels in Heaven to bring Genesis back.
It's hard to recommend this to people because in some way it's bound to offend everyone. However, for the extremely open minded, it's a terrific story by Garth Ennis and beautifully drawn by Steve Dillon. Highly recommended, but not for everyone."
