"This graphic novel was so-so. I liked the art work and the concept, but that was about it. I found the narrative quite boring and the pacing was completely off. There was a great deal of action (a good thing), but the character development was minimal. As well, the sexism and racism were a bit much. I realize that Moore is mimicking the Victorian Age, but even so it was over the top in this graphic novel. This work could have been so much better with a little more thought and planning. A good editor could of helped here as well."
"The Victorian Age saw the creation of some of the most famous characters in Western literature: Captain Nemo, usually found in his mythical ship 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea; Allan Quartermain, the adventurer who discovered King Solomon's Mines; Mina Murray, the heroine who barely escaped from Dracula; Hawley Griffin, the original Invisible Man himself; Henry Jekyll and his alter ego, better known as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Comics genius Alan Moore collects them all here and turns them into team of superheroes who use their unique capabilities, powers, and experiences to save England from the clutches of a mysterious madman. The year is 1898, and the heroes have been gathered together in London from all corners of the globe by the head of the Secret Service. They're a rough-and-tumble bunch, flawed and washed-up, but when a criminal mastermind threatens to firebomb London's East End and bring down the British Empire, these 19th century characters come to life and rally to the rescue. The illustrations are as bright and action-packed as anything out of Superman, Batman, Spiderman, or Moore's own comic masterpiece The Watchmen. Originally published as individual comic book issues and then collected into two volumes, Moore and his team of artists at DC Comics created two additional adventures, The Black Dossier and Century 1910. Together, the series is as chock-full of superhero-style action, danger, gore, and derring-do as it is of historical detail, literary references, and Victorian flair. A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is another genre-buster that proves just how much mystery and adventure can be packed into one fantastic era."
"By presenting the book as a real Victorian "picture book" for kids, the author can then proceed to use outdated language, racist caricatures, and the like in the story. I can understand the setting and historical accuracy but that doesn't mean I want to subject myself to it, mind. The story doesn't overcome my initial disdain, though I do like the originality with which they recycle old myths, legends, and characters for a new purpose, including Holmes and Moriarty. That's the reason I give two stars."
"This book is really cool. The characters are very engaging; and the world is very well structured. The drawings are superb.
This entire work is a parody of just about every subject it touches on. And it touches many. The most obvious subjects are Victorian England and the popular literature of the nineteenth century. The very many characters and protagonists are famously stolen from mostly well known literary works; and are much more enjoyable because of this theft. Those characters that are not so easily identified are that much more fun when the reader is able to decipher their origins and, thus, their attitudes--which are frequently fleshed out and stretched by Alan Moore. My favorite character--by far--is Miss Wilhemina Murray, lately divorced.
I will not spoil others enjoyment by spelling out her character's literary origin, nor any of the other character's. The discovery is sometimes half the fun. (In any event, Wikipedia has an excellent entry on this book; and all charcters' backgrounds are available there for any reader's information).
This is an easy read and a thoroughly enjoyable one. And, by all means, read the faux pulp "Alan and the Sundered Veil", included near the end. It helps to set up portions of Volume II."
