"Well Nigel will be proud of me: finally reading a book about rugby...though it is 75% politics, I did also enjoy the rugby bit. An interesting and well written exposition of the strategy of national unification that Mandela deployed around the game of rugby and in particular the 1995 Rugby World Cup and its final game that South Africa won, just. Great story telling ability used to tell complex history and the emotional side of Mandela's political seduction of white South Africa away from its fears. Read it in almost one sitting...."
"Even for those of us who lived through the end of apartheid in South Africa, this is a fascinating read. Really helped me to appreciate the magnitude of what Nelson Mandela accomplished...and wonder if we can ever get to a similar sense of racial partity in the U.S."
"It's a journalistic account of Nelson Mandela, the end of apartheid in South Africa, and its link to the Springboks' victory in the 1995 Rugby World Cup. It's a fascinating story and Carlin got great access to people, but it had two flaws that bothered me. one, everyone interviewed thought this was really important and significant, so much so that it felt schmaltzy and like a Disney movie for stretches. Second, I found it grating how much the whites were allowed to keep their dignity and ownership of South African identity at the cost of vignettes of black South Africans being subservient. Yes, the country succeeded where others did not because whites were accomodated and not driven out (ie Zimbabwe, Uganda), but it felt fake.
That said, still worth reading and will give insight into why Mandela may be the greatest leader alive today."
"Definitely not a book about rugby, or politics. Not a History book, either. An excellent report on the importance of basic human relations and emotional respect. Great lessons on assertiveness, leadership and human behaviour. And, by the way, a thrilling story."
