Description: Good. What's the difference between fiction and reality? Ficton has to make sense. Tom Clancy. If you buy this book, it will ship from Kentucky. It may have some writing and highlighting. If this is a book for class, it might not have some of the extra materials it originally came with like the CD or any access codes. You probably don't need those anyway, but you might want to check with your professor first just in case. Please email us if you have any questions, and thanks for checking us ... read more
"It took me many months to read this book which might make it seem that I didn't enjoy it. However, that's not the case. I especially loved the early chapters in this book which give you a walk through, behind-the-scenes look at London's Natural History Museum. It took me so long to finish it because I lack the discipline to push through non-fiction. Stories propel me forward and compel me to keep reading...even good non-fiction just doesn't do that for me.
This book includes scientific information about the collection, categorizing, and obsessing over animals, rocks, shells, insects, etc as well as often very funny stories about the scientists who study them.
I love museums, particularly Natural History museums and so I enjoyed this book very much. I did disagree with the author's assumption of evolution as THE ONLY WAY and (as a friend who read this stated) his inability to distinguish between evolution within a species as opposed to evolution from one species to another. I still don't buy that I evolved from a fish."
"I may not have been in the mood to read this book; it was really very good. There was a ton of information that was new to me: lots of scientists working at the museum, how they preserve some of the things; the challenge of naming everything. The fact that he loves the museum and what he does there came through clearly and was pretty infectious. I had trouble getting my head around spending your whole life finding out everything there is to know about an obscure insect nobody has ever heard of. I like to think of myself as one who appreciates knowledge for knowledge's sake but my reaction to those 'gnomes' (his word) made me realize that I am more of a Philistine than I would fancy myself to be. His discussion about the challenge of making a museum "user friendly" for all ages and packing in as much factual information as possible in a limited space was very interesting. I am pretty old-fashioned myself--continuous glass cases in some sort of logical order and no buttons to push is my idea of a good display. Maybe a few chairs."
"I have always always wanted to go behind those sacred doors in every museum that conceal 'the back rooms'. Fortey only proves that this urgent desire is well founded. A loving and humorous history of the Natural History Museum in London full of all kinds of great little biographical artifacts."
"Anglophilic, bibliophilic museum-goers - as well as fans of good science writing for laymen - will thoroughly enjoy this dense treat of a book. Fortey is amusing and informative, educating the reader on the importance of taxonomy and curation in the computer age while simultaneously sharing the dirt on the more eccentric of his colleagues and predecessors."
