"The classic guide to improvisation -- totally useful for writers. The section on masks is beautifully bizarre. Status games, sending and receiving..."
"An absolutely essential introduction to improvisation. Keith Johnstone, the author, is one of the founders of modern improvisation. That can only be said of a few others, such as Del Close or Viola Spolin.
If you read other books on improv, this book may come as something of a shock. It's more a philoshical journey of the why's of improv, rather than a how-to guide. It delves deeply into how Johnstone started experimenting with improvisational techniques, what's wrong with the modern education system, and how being possessed is a good thing.
Along the way, though, you'll learn some very valuable things about the craft- most notably, all the text about status, one of Johnstone's most significant contributions to the art.
The last third of the book is dedicated to masks, both physical and allegorical... both in modern theatre and in tribal rituals. One the one hand, it sounds completely insane, and on the other hand, it's utterly fascinating. And the general principles of maskwork and "getting out of your head" definitely apply directly to improv."
