"This was the third book in the Vampirates series, and I think the best one so far. The first two books seemed to be lacking in drama, but they were good set up for this book. I think I stuck with them because there is just SO much potential story wise. I publish a magazine for teenagers and I am not sure if the first two books would hold their attention.
I get the feeling that Justin Somper is finally becoming comfortable with the characters and the situations they are in. I would love to know a little more about the mix of how the year 2512 feels more like the 19th century. What got us there? (Terry Brooks alludes to the Great War from his first book Sword of Shannara.)
It ends on a cliff hanger so book four will be a must read.
"This is such an interesting series. Connor and Grace are separated for most of the book. Connor is on the Diablo, once again discovering that Malucco Wrathe is not really the kind of pirate Connor wants to be. And when he discovers he didn't kill Jez Stuckley and tries to make amends, he unleashes something he never intended. Grace, meanwhile, is with Lorcan at the Vampirates healing grounds. She's a healer in training and when she tries to help Lorcan she sees things about her own past that he won't explain. When the Vampirate ship's captain falls dangerously ill, she steps up to save him. Although it's not a cliffhanger ending, I can't wait to start listening to the next book."
