Description: New. A return to the bestselling Old Man's War universe, "Zoe's Tale" features oneof the most appealing characters in the series. read more
"This is easy-reading science fiction that feels light but also has moments of substance. The story attends more to the personal than to the technological. I think of it as sort of in the Ender's Game vein (the fate of a race hangs on a child) with a teenage girl protagonist. The main characters feel real and believable and Scalzi made me care about them. I enjoyed the snappy dialogue among the teens. In fact, I was quite impressed by how well a middle-aged male author could depict these teenage girls. I especially like Scalzi's writing style, for its simplicity and naturalness. As for favorite quotes, one of Zoe's lines rang a bell for me: "I don't know if my life is complicated, or if it's that I just think too much about things." I have read one other book in the Old Man's War series, and I will look forward to reading more."
"A parallel novel to THE LAST COLONY, in which a colony led by "Old Man's War" series hero John Perry finds itself in unplanned territory with alien enemies hunting for it. The presence of Zoe, John's adopted daughter, has riveted the attention of even more aliens to the situation. It's going to be a scrimmage. Zoe refuses to escape to her alien friends, but she is willing to be an ambassador to them.
Scalzi's readers get the humanity and humor they expect. In his acknowledgements he talks about the women who read the manuscript to make sure Zoe's teenage voice is authentic. Blessedly, he has avoided spoilering the clever surprise ending of THE LAST COLONY. This book is suitable for a younger average audience than the rest of the series: teens and up."
"After saying that he was done with the Old Man universe Scalzi returned pretty quickly with a parallel time story to The Lost Colony. This tells the story from Zoe's perspective. She was a well formed yet tertiary character in the previous books (Ghost Brigades and Lost Colony) so it was nice feeling, seeing, experiencing the story from her perspective. It was a great evolution of her character and was a much more emotionally developed story than his previous ones. (Not that the others were unemotional, please don't think that.) This was not some lame rehash of his previous endeavors, he was not being lazy and trying to cash in, this book holds its own and I would argue that it could also stand on its own. My one complaint and this may be a bit of a spoiler if you have not read the Lost Colony, but I wish that Zoe's Tale had continued with even a brief foray into her experiences once she reaches Earth. However I do acknowledge the wordy excess that could create. But it still would have been nice to see."
"This is the story of The Last Colony told from the POV of Zoe Boutin-Perry, the daughter of Roanoke colony leaders John and Jane Perry. If you haven't read TLC I would advise you to read it before reading this book. The story makes sense even without prior reading, though you will find some of the key events a little glossed over.
Zoe's relationship with the Obin is the main force in the novel and it is nice how that relationship changes in the course of the book. Zoe matures quickly but not unbelievablely considering her history.
I liked this book because it fills in some gray areas form TLC and it is written with just the right mixture of humor, cockiness, teenage prattle. It is not as powerfully written as the first two books in the Old Man's War series but I don't believe that was the goal. Scalzi meant this book to be fun and it acheives that easily."
