"Where to start. I guess this book caught me in a transitional time in my life. At first it annoyed me. I thought it was a little too left leaning (ok I am left leaning, but I don't like things to be too biased, even if I agree with them.) Then Howard Zinn, who wrote the original book and serves here as narrator, started to speak directly to me. To my growing confusion, discontent and disillusionment. I just always wanted to ignore these things I kind of knew. Politicians are corrupt. America isn't always the greatest country in the world. And, in fact, I am starting to worry that we are just being fed propoganda about how AWESOME we are, to cover up how awesome we aren't. Still, this book is a little one-sided even a little delusional. But at least Zinn believes this country can be better and that there is a brighter future. I want to believe some of his ideas are a away to make it better, but I think it's just grasping at straws. As you can see from the 4 stars, I really got into this book. It made me want to go out and make a differnce and to stop being complacent. It was also a pretty exciting version of our history."
"I have been meaning to read a People's History of the United States for years now, but just haven't gotten to it, so when I saw this at the library I thought that it could be a good way to tide me over until then and learn a little in the process. This book is jam packed. In fact there is so much info in here that it becomes overwhelming, even in graphic novel form.
This book is full of atrocities committed by the US, usually in a covert manner and then explained to the public in a totally different way (or never explained to us at all). I found the book pretty depressing and although Zinn gives a hopeful epilogue at the end of the book, I didn't feel hopeful at all.
All in all, a good book full of LOTS of information that is not normally presented to the public, especially in such a readable format."
"I don't dispute that much of what is presented here is factual. I would however dispute that ALL of the facts are being presented. I understand that those who believe in "radical" politics feel that their viewpoints have been massively underrepresented - but that doesn't give you a pass on dealing with historical facts that don't support your overarching thesis.
This is a polemic on American imperialism rather than an alternative look at American history... and that impression is reinforced by the pamphleteer-style art that you find in the graphic novel.
While I appreciated hearing Zinn's story & personal connections both to WW2 and the Vietnam protest movement, I feel like a couple of things happen with those elements of the book:
1. It gives Zinn an opportunity to make his point without dealing with the whole history of either war. 2. It is painfully obvious that Zinn exalts in his friendships & associations with Father Berrigan & Daniel Ellsworth... that being on the stage of history around North Vietnam, the Pentagon Papers & the sit-ins in Atlanta validate his viewpoint on American history.
Again, I don't deny that horrific things have been using American power for the benefit of American business... but I think it is simplistic to blame the last 120 years of world history on American imperialism."
"I had always wanted to read the text-only version of this book for quite some time, but never did. I'm glad I waited because the graphics are great. I loved how historical photographs are intertwined amongst them. The book is hard to swallow because it unveils many government cover-ups, lies, and oppressive actions. However, Zinn wraps it up by encouraging human beings to be compassionate, kind, and courageous despite the our past mistakes and the current war in Iraq."
