"I *love* this book -- the kind for which you break engagements and go home early just so you can get in bed and read it; the kind that makes you look forward to getting out of bed and going to work in the morning because you'll get to read it on the subway on the way there.
"The Likeness" is a sequel to Tana French's "In the Woods", which I also highly recommend, and even though the plots do not depend on each other, I also recommend reading them in order because you'll know the characters better and probably enjoy the sequel even more. "In the Woods" is basically a straightforward detective-based mystery (in form; I do think the writing and setting and characters take the form to awesome heights), but "The Likeness" is a novel that discourages me from ever trying to write one of my own because I know there is no way I could ever write one as amazing as this.
Aspects of the novel remind me a lot of Donna Tartt's book "The Secret History". It's like a grown-up "Secret History" for when you enter your 30s, and I am just as obsessed with it as I was with "The Secret History" when I was in high school."
"I found Tana French's prose, and exceptional story telling remarkable. Anyone who loves mysteries, will find it hard to outguess this one.
Cassie Maddox is called to the scene of a murder. But the victim could be her twin. She agrees to go undercover, in order to smoke out the killer.
When Cassie becomes so enmeshed in her undercover job,her boss begins to wonder if she has crossed the line of no return, all the while allowing her to take more and more risks. Even those who knew her best appear to have no clue. Or do they?
As the story escalates and we begin to wonder if Cassie can hold it together, a few people become suspicious and the noose around Cassie's neck tightens. Who will crack first, Cassie or the killer.
But Cassie wants to hang on, as do we, to figure out exactly who did do it.
Having read this book before French's first novel which debuted Cassie, I found a few comments referring back to the original a bit confusing, but not enough to deter from the story.
This is an amazing read."
"Another one that took me a while to get into, but well worth it. I was transported to the beautiful house with the beautiful friends and I really wanted Cassie/Lexie to be able to stay there forever. The ending was a bit of a letdown because of this. It was sad when the little fairytale had to end and everyone was brought back to reality. Tara French toned down all the excessive imagery and it was a swift, engaging read."
