"Amelia Earhart: The Legend of the Lost Aviator by Shelley Tanaka This is the story of Amelia Earhart, one of the most famous female pilots whose plane was lost in her second attempt to fly around the world. Photos accompany the text along with illustrations by David Craig. There are also sidebars with supplementary information like a timeline of attempts to fly around the world and early navigation equipment.
I thought this book was very informative and I'm glad I read it before seeing the movie based on Earhart's life that just came out. I like how it makes Amelia real, and by the words and structure create an emotional response.
As far as accuracy, it was clear to me that the author has done a great deal of research. She is extensive and there is a very rich bibliography that includes primary and secondary sources. However, it does not address some accounts that claim Earhart was careless in her flight preparations.
I thought is well organized. It begins with Earhart seeing her first airplane in 1908 and this sets the tone. It then goes in chronological order starting with Earhart's childhood until she was lost. The break up of chapters also allows for easy skimming.
The design and style is very appealing. Each chapter begins with an illustration that depicts some of what the chapter will discuss. Craig's illustrations are beautiful, but I felt some took too much liberty, especially the last one showing Amelia and Frank Noonan, her flying companion, leaving their plane in the ocean, a theory about what happened when she was lost. I would have no illustration at all because some might mistake it as fact. In addition to the illustrations there are an abundance of photos that help bring Earhart to life. There are also many sidebars that bring greater meaning to the story.
"Superb example of non-fiction for children. Full of accurate information, makes Amelia real, and by the words and structure creates an emotional response. Wow. Won the Orbis Pictus award this year."
"when i first learned i had to read this for class, and i brought a picture of the cover up on the screen, i thought amelia was shooting laser beams out of her eyes like a robot. imagine my disappointment... i never really understood the amelia earhart fascination: she was just a pretty girl who got herself lost. mysteriously. she is famous for having failed. mysteriously. and we will love our failures. but i know she paved the way for spunky girls everywhere, and lord knows i havent done anything in my life worth having a picture book devoted to, so what the hell? goggle up, ladies, and take charge. just bring a compass, yeah?"
"I love this book so very much. I recently returned at my pubic library this afternoon. I love learning about Amelia Earhart. This very good for kids ages 7 to 10. I just turned 11, but still it's a great book."
