"The translator allowed a practical ancient theatre course I took to perform Alcestis this summer, so most of my experience with this book comes from this one play. The translation overall is easy to read and fairly true to the original Greek. There are a few points where we questioned the choice of such idiomatic English, but still the text was faithful in translation.
The introduction in this book is also well worth a read through, providing useful information on the plays and author. As a fairly new translation, it (and the language of the translations) are easy to understand, but still take one's own interpretation on, particularly in a performance setting.
When we put on this version of Alcestis, it was well-received, which partly is because of the actors, but without a proper translation as script, the actors would have been without words. I would recommend this translation/book to others interested in Euripides, whether for the purposes of simply reading a small selection of the author or for performing a selection."
"Medea: The more books I read of Antiquity the more disturbed I become. Despite the surprisingly modern thoughts and ideas presented regarding the roles of men and women spoken by Medea herself....It was hard to look past the graphic descriptions of murder, the mentally insane mother who kills her own children to get back and her former husband, and the constant talk about sex. The only positive thing I got out of this was the importance placed upon keeping your word, and the Honor and "blessings" that follow."
