"Jane Green creates flawed characters that I cared about from page 1. Intertwining the fractured lives of the characters as they all make their way to spend the summer at financially troubled Nan's house in Nantucket. Once there, through her eccentric compassion and warmth, Nan helps them sort out their problems while they help her retain the life and house that she's known for the past 40 years.
Everyone has times where they just need to get away and regroup. This book made me yearn to run off to a beach on the east coast to breathe for a while. Not because I have any big life drama going on; my life is much the opposite. In movies and in other books I've read, there is a magic implied to the east coast beach communities. A sense of privilege, importance, and peace. So now I want to plan a vacation.
Back to the book. Does it feel a little orchestrated? Sure. Did everything magically resolve itself by the end? Of course. But it's summer reading. I didn't want any thought-provoking life lessons here.
Jane Green lends an understanding and sympathetic insight to each character, and an easy skill for moving the storyline and characters along. This was a very quick, easy, enjoyable read that I highly recommend."
"This book could easily be made into a Hollywood movie. It'd be a nice drama, somewhere in the neighborhood of The Family Stone meets Evening. The book is filled with the current cultural views on relationships. We all know that the reason a marriage ends is because, ultimately, that person was never our soulmate, (like we thought they were in the beginning), and in hindsight, we realize that we never really were happy, were never being true to ourselves while we were in the relationship, and now that we're with our *true* lifelong companion, we feel complete, can see that the previous relationship and pain were the necessary paths to lead us to what is now a most fulfilling life. Seriously? I think my favorite part about reading this book will be figuring out who should play the roles in the Hollywood movie. Nan - Barbara Hershey Michael - Jude Law Everett - Tom Wilkinson Daff - Jennifer Connolly Richard - Dermot Mulroney Daniel -Peter Sarsgaard Bee - Maggie Gylenhaal Jordana - Robin Wright Penn Mark (the contractor)- Vince Vaughn"
"This book was about sad endings that led to wonderful new beginnings. The first hundred pages of the book introduce the cast of characters: Bee and Daniel, a married couple that is about to split because Daniel is ready to admit he is gay; Daff and Richard, a couple who has split because of an infedility and are now dealing with a 13 year-old daughter named Jess who has turned into a shoplifting terror; Michael, who has recently had an affair with the boss's wife and is trying to escape from her attentions; and Nan, who is Muchael's mother but also an eccentric lady who owns a house on Nantucket that she opens as a boarding house and who many of the main characters come to at one point or another. After that all the stories intertwine on the island of Nantucket, until the big surprise about Nan's dead husband comes out. Each person finds exactly what they need on the island of Nantucket, even if it wasn't initially what they came to look for. A great read, light enough for summer, and serious enough not to bore anyone."
"Really enjoyed reading this author for the first time, I like how she has different plots and they are twisted into each other. It's a quick read, light and summery. Perfect if you are having seasonal depression and you will definately want to visit Nantucket after reading this!"
