About this title: "The Child in Time" opens with a harrowing event. Stephen Lewis, a successful author of children's books, takes his three-year-old daughter on a routine Saturday morning trip to the supermarket. "It's not correct to say I finished this book; I just stopped reading. With one exception (The Innocent) I have put down every McEwan book I tried to read. I find his initial premises fascinating, but after 50 pages or so, I start to get bogged down in what I would call "over-writing," by which I mean writing for the author and not the reader. The story becomes relatively meaningless, and even the characters are subservient to the writer's phrase. I'm probably in a minority, but that's my take."
"This was easily the strangest of McEwan's novels I've read. The chances it takes are odd, and the book as a whole raises more questions than it answers.
McEwan has such a masterful grasp on time as presented in fiction, though, that throughout the novel you're giving him the benefit of the doubt. But by the novel's conclusion, for once you're not certain that was the wisest course.
There are easier and more rewarding novels in the McEwan canon."
"Deals with several extreme aspects of children and child raising: parents working through a loss, a man reverting to childhood, how the protagonist as a child affected the relationship between his parents, and the anticipation of a new birth. Didn't think this was McEwan's best, but it was interesting."
"It was worth the read but definitely not as good as his others. Although, I would say this ending is by far the happiest of all his books I have read. There is a redeeming quality to it, which is enjoyable. The idea of people processing pain in different ways and on their own time, but ultimately being able to heal together felt like a genuine approach to the story and the characters.
McEwan explored the idea of time in this book and how no one really has a grasp on what time truly is; I am not sure if I necessarily found this part a good addition to the story. In fact, I found it a little weird and out of place. (Although, I am very wiling to listen to different opinions.)
I hadn't heard anything about this book from other people and I suppose that's because if you're going to read and talk about a book of his, this one would be lower on the list. My recommendation: go read Atonement and Chisel Beach first."
