"I just finished this guilty pleasure/thriller novel. "Nothing to Lose" was the first novel I have read from this author. I liked it enough that I will probably give another book in this series a try, although I'm not racing out to get another one or anything. Unlike other reviewers here, I thought the pacing of the book was fine, but I agree that a lot of the plot was pretty unbelievable. Plus, I really couldn't get a handle on the main character's (Jack Reacher) motivation for continuing to pursue revealing the secrets of the town of Despair. It reminded me a lot of Marty McFly in the movie "Back to the Future". Reacher kept going back because he was told not to and essentially called "chicken"...but Reacher didn't ever learn his lesson."
"When you read about Reacher, you don't feel tension about his survival---you know that what ever happens he will deal with it. Maybe an ancillary character will get bruised or even killed off, but mainly it is the bad guys who get broken up. Finding out how Child gets his man out of the pickle, and finding the inside dope on how some things work is part of the fun, as is watching the quirky plot unfold. The Nobel Prize Committee members probably read Reacher, they just won't admit it, He is much too enjoyable to pass up."
"This author's books always seem to dominate the crime shelves whenever I go into a bookshop, and I've been a little dismissive of this author in the past; considering his books a little too thriller'ish for my tastes. A bit of a sweeping conclusion to draw on my behalf without ever having read any of his books. I was prompted to try this author, by a book podcast which reviewed his latest book and it sounded intriguing so I thought I'd give previous book a go. I'm glad I did. The central character is Jack Reacher, a former military cop who now travels through America giving aid to a cause he believes in. Although the concept does follow the lines of a thriller, Reacher is such a no nonsense guy, that I got pulled into the book just by his attitude of having total belief in himself. As well drawn as the character is, and this is an ongoing series so the author has had time to flesh him out, it's the dialogue which just pulses off the page. Sharp, snappy. And at times very amusing. There's no use of 'he said.she said', just great flowing dialogue. My only slightly complaint, is Reacher is a guy who can measure distances mentally, can weigh up a person when he walks into a room (he even has an eternal clock) and sometimes that level of technical information, for me bogged the story down at times. Personally I'd've liked to have seen the story edited a little tighter, but that's just my personal preference. In the end, this is still a series I want to track down and immerse myself in."
"I have read a few of the Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child but this may be the most enjoyable as well as the most unbelievable. Jack Reacher, the hero, is always on the move -- won't stay anywhere no matter how entangled or endeared he becomes--rents motels rooms by the night, travels light --buys new clothes when the old ones get dirty and carries only his wallet and a folding toothbrush in his pocket. He's big and tough almost to the point of cartoon. In this story he faces down a whole small Colorado town through the combination of both incredible physical prowess and equally incredible wit and intuition. The story is set between two small towns called Hope and Despair and the action is triggered by the reception Reacher gets as he is stranded between them while hitchhiking and walks into Despair, is arrested then released and on his way out in the dark stumbles over a dead body. Missing persons, a hidden military depot, nightly flights of a small plane and a company town totally owned and run by an end-time fundamentalist preacher set the plot. There's lots of wham, pow, slam every time Reacher encounters an antagonist and he always comes out on top no matter the odds against him, but the political and practical detail Reacher displays from his tough past as a military cop ground his unlikeliness heroic feats in real cunning and compassion. Most of all Child's sharp critique of the military industrial complex, American involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan and its treatment of veterans, get such a sharp indictment that they carry the book's excesses and turn it into a macho morality tale. The glimpse of the scale of a huge recycling plant and sense of the tracks and ecological footprints of various metals is a nice touch too and part of the book's instructive value. I couldn't put it down."
