"Sequel to the Alchemyst. This book is a direct continuation of the Alchemyst and it is important that you read that book first in order to understand the storyline. Numerous references are made back to the first book.
The story continues with the twins of prophecy - Sophie having her magical powers Awakened, and Josh being a bit jealous of her powers and anxious for his own powers to be Awakened. There are several very unusual and very old creatures who are out to destroy the twins. The plot move along very fast - you certainly don't have time to get 'bored' with the story. You just wonder HOW they can possibly get out of each new situation.
A very entertaining fantasy story written for young adults - but can certainly be enjoyed by their parents as well. :)
The ending of the story in this book leads directly into book #3 - The Sorceress, whichI think is the last in the series."
"I do have to say that Michael Scott has created another book worth reading in this second installalation of the Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel.
Starting off right where the first book ends, josh and Sophie as well as nicholas and Scathach the vampire have to find their way through what once was Nicholas's birth city, yet it has changed, and is now in the control of the immortal Niccolo, a servant of a dark elder. The adventures the foursome have as they seek out an ally and a way to train Sophie in another of the elemental magics expand as Niccolo summons the Disir, more commonly known as Valkaryies to try to defeat Scathach, yet the trio of Disir also bring their own suprise that most likely is the end of Scathach. After the wild action involved in the fight, Josh is confronted by John Dee, a very deadly and ruthless immortal who has pursued the Flamels for centures seeking the Codex, and Niccolo. Both of whom offer Josh something he cannot refuse, to get his powers awakened so he could be more like his sister. Yet what price must he pay for it? only the Elder who awakens Josh's power knows. And will they survive long enough to train Josh? A mystery yet to be found.
During all this, Perenelle, Nicholas's wife, who is held prisoner in Alcatraz proves that despite her being without power, she is still one not to be underestimated, as she proves it by escaping the Sphinx that had been her guard with the help of a very old ghost turned poltergeist. And her finding a very powerful ally in a most unexpected place. Will she manage to escape the island as well as she did the cell of her prison? or will she fail? time will tell."
"Book 2 in this planned six-book series follows the fast-paced romp of Sophie and Josh Newman, the all-powerful twins prophesied by Alexander the Mage in the Codex, through a world full of mystery, magic, and history. Seeking refuge from Dr. John Dee and Niccolo Machiavelli in Paris, the twins, Scatty, and Nicholas Flammel visit old friends, who continue the twins' training in elemental arts and defense. As they encounter other creatures unleashed by Dee and Machiavelli, the twins' loyalty to Nicholas falters as they question why they have been placed in this predicament, which threatens their lives and their bond as brother and sister.
Meanwhile, Perenelle Flammel battles her own demons on the island of Alcatraz.
Well-written, suspenseful, and full of intriguing folklore, legends, and historical accounts, this book meets the expectations put forth by book 1 in the series, The Alchemyst."
"While The Alchemyst was a blast from start to finish, I feel like The Magician is missing just a little something. New characters are introduced, Josh and Sophie have larger roles, Perenelle's story is much more developed, and Machiavelli/Saint Germain are just about the best new additions to the story that could have happened, with a head nod to Joan.
Michael Scott really has created quite the universe here, and his attention to detail (fantasy and historical) is impressive. The book fits squarely in the middle of a series, which I think is why it seems to slump a bit. I've always had a problem with the 2nd in trilogies or anthologies, with the exception of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. On that same vein, I really didn't like that movie until the second time I watched it, at which point I was hooked. I could easily see this happening with The Magician. It has all the qualities of a great book in the series, and could easily stand out with the new characters and plot, but it just hasn't "popped" for me yet. In a few years, when I read them again, I'm sure I'll have to change the rating to a 5. It's certainly worth it - just not on the first read for me."
