"I was very pleased with myself for finishing every page of _The Family_. It gets dense at times with all of the names of everyone who's been involved in fundamentalism's geopolitical enterprises, and sometimes I could feel the strain of writing a long book on a guy (Sharlet) who works primarily in journalism. But I came away with a much better understanding of the ideologies that underlie American fundamentalism and its dictums, which sometimes seem so dissociated from the liberal Christianity that I grew up with. They are and they aren't. What is the connection between these folks' strong-armed Jesus and their rabid attachment to capitalism run amok? Sharlet makes it clear that what they finally believe can be housed in familiar axiom: Might is Right."
"Scary book. The right wing is a collection of nutcases but in this case, they're organized along the lines of using poltical organization to forward their agenda. The classical case is the recent infiltration and domination during the benighted Bush administration. I for one don't want to be a fundamentalist Christian and don't want them telling me how to think or teach."
"I have very mixed feelings about this book. I saw an interview with the author on Bill Maher, and I was really looking forward to reading the book to learn more. I was very interested in the subject matter and I do think it is important for people to know that this is going on. It is terrifying really. But....the way the information was relayed was very boring to me. It just seemed to drag on and on. I also felt like it got off subject in the last few chapters that were about fundamentalism but not "The Family". I was also disappointed to read the whole book and still feel like I didn't get what "The Family's" beliefs are. I am not sure if that is the fault of the book or if I just couldn't wrap my brain around their beliefs since they are so different than my own."
"This book was both fascinating and frustrating (and a bit scary!). It's about a hidden-in-plain-sight religious society that every president has been a member of since it's inception (as well as many other members of congress). They are the group that runs the National Prayer Breakfast, which always includes the President. And their headquarters are walking distance from my house! Very chilling how connected they are to power and how they view religion, the world, and their role as leaders. The frustrating part was the book itself; not well written and in desperate need of a good editor."
