"SUCH a great book. I love riding anyway, and this just felt like a great adventure. Who doesn't think that it would fun to ride your bike across the country, seeing the world? (besides having sore leg muscles the whole time . . .)
I also loved the relationship between Chris and Win. It was written so well- particularly with the flashbacks every other chapter. I like how that was done, because we get more insight into the characters and the way they think. Their relationship feels very real.
The mystery and suspense aspect was great as well- i could hardly wait to find out what happened.
p.s. a shout out to Cat for recommending this to me! (and letting me borrow it . . .)"
"Two boys graduate from high school and decide to ride their bikes from their home in West Virginia to Seattle. Nearing their goal, Win abandons Chris. Angry, Chris finishes the journey alone, returns home and goes on to college. Win does not return. An FBI agent shows up at college to harass Chris about the whereabouts of Win, implying that there was foul play involved. I loved this book! It is a great "coming of age story". The account of their travels and their friendship and their own self discovery is wonderful. Fully of witty dialogue. I read it in one sitting. Could be a classic."
""On my honor, I pledge that I have neither given nor received unauthorized help on this assignment nor have I presented someone else's work as my own."
I chose to read Shift by Jennifer Bradbury for my summer reading. Shiftis a coming of age novel about two best friends, Chris and Win, who take a cross country bike trip during the summer before college, starting in West Virginia and ending in Seatle where Win has an uncle. Chris and Win have been raised in two completely different atmospheres. Chris has been raised in a supportive family and taught to work for money, while Win was raised in a pressured lifestyle. Win's dad is a CEO of a company, wealthy, and in Win's mind, never proud of his son. To Win, whatever he does is never good enough in the eyes of his father. As a result of his father's behavior, Win acts rebeliously since he knows that he'll never be able to please his dad. Unfortunatly, his dad still manages pulls a few strings to get him into an Ivy League university.
On the road, Chris discovers a massive amount of cash in Win's bag. Assuming his friend will explain it later, Chris doesn't mention that he found it. Not known to Chris at the time, Win has no intention of returning in the fall for college orientation. Near the end of the road, Win ends up ditching Chris, who manages to finish the journey by himself. He returns home by himself and heads to his first week of college, and assumes Win has done so as well until and F.B.I. agent starts asking questions. Apparently Win doesn't have an uncle in Seatle and the wad of cash Chris found sums up to about $19,000. Win's well connected dad is ready to manipulate as many people as possible to find out what happened to his son, and he thinks Chris knows something about it.
Overall, Shift was just a mediocre book. It had the characters and plot to go far, but the author didn't make me care about what happened. I would recommend it to a bike fanatic or someone who enjoys teenage self discovery and the challenging transition into manhood."
"Christopher and Win, short for Winston, are best friends who decide to do something truly epic after their senior year of high school. They embark on a cross-country bike trip, from their homes in West Virginia to Seattle. Almost at the end, a confrontation between the two friends split them apart and Chris is left on his own to dip his front tire in the Pacific ocean before returning home. He assumes Win will do the same thing shortly....but Win never returns and Chris's world is just about to "shift".
I enjoyed this book especially with the mysterious element of finding out exactly what happened on the trip to cause Win to "disappear". The book alternates between present and past as Chris tries to answer the question "Where is Win" by remembering the trip they both take. When Chris starts to receive mysterious postcards, he embarks on another trip....this time to find Win and find the answers he so desperately needs."
