"I learned a lot about the wine making industry; named regions and areas within these regions where wine is made. I learned new terminology such as "pre-phylloxera", that wine of the same vintage may taste differently depending on the size of the bottle. etc. These facts and many historical events associated with wine, its merchandising, its tasting were not studied, but by the end of the book you knew about all of this. Then too there was the mystery about the authenticity of wines such as a 1787 LaFitte bottle with the initials Th J on it. These initials were alleged to be those of Thomas Jefferson. At times the story dragged on a bit but overall it was a good read."
"Really great, concise book if you're seriously into wine. It's not so much a "mystery" as a history of the rare wine trade in Europe and the US in the past half-century or so. I'm glad I had read the story of Veuve Clicquot first since it centered me a little on the history of still wines in Europe, in particular France. But since I'm not a high-end wine afficionado (unfortunately) it took a little while to get familiar with all of the vineyard names. Anyway - I started to lose it towards the end. But then the last chapter rejuvenated me and then it was over. I really enjoyed reading about the "dirt" on Rodenstock and I wish it had been fleshed out more. But perhaps that's all there is to the story at this point. Really best for wine lovers. It could put non-oenophiles to sleep in the first half."
"This wasn't exactly a mystery novel. It was more a story of the controversy involving a rare wine dealer that claimed to have found rare wine previously owned by Thomas Jefferson and sold it for ridiculous amounts despite the lack of credible evidence tying the wine to Jefferson. It was eventually determined that the neither the wine nor the bottles was really Jefferson's.
It's a quick read and worth it if you are interested in a bit of the history of Jefferson's interest in wines, the Bordeaux region and wines, wine chateuxs, and rare wine sales and collection."
"This book proved to me several things I've always believed....one, that nobody should ever take wine too seriously. Two, people can be fooled into believing almost anything. Three, people that take wine too seriously take themselves too seriously and that's the problem. Anyway, a good read about an amazing con, wine collecting and the "inner" workings of elite wine-tasting. Some people just have too much money for their own good. Easy to read and intriguing. It will remind you to buy wine that YOU think tastes good, not something that is based on the price-tag or somebody else says is "good". If it comes in a box and you like it, then it's good. Otherwise, become a wine-snob and get ripped off like the dips in this book."
