"I suspect Trenton Lee Stewart must have known that he was on to a good thing with his Benedict Society series - especially as the first was so very much the kind of book that would delight and mystify young children, while also not boring the adults who would have to read these books out loud until presumably their progeny fell into a dream-like stupor. With Perilous Journey, he takes the universe and characters first explored in the first book and expands their horizons, moving the story and the stakes to a global scale, while intelligently using plot points and character traits first mentioned in the earlier book to flesh out and give weight to the sequel.
Again, the plot isn't the most plausible of storylines, even after disbelief has been duly suspended. The eponymous Society of precocious children must now embark on a worldwide quest, solving clues and keeping their wits about them, to find their kidnapped patron. While it lacks the frenetic zing of the first novel, Perilous Journey benefits even further from Stewart's deft, assured characterisation. Under his watchful eye, the children already so well sketched-out in his first novel come to life in this one - with Reynie struggling with some very adult concerns about his ability to trust others; Sticky discovering an ego that proves difficult to tame, or Constance discovering depths to her abilities that frighten and exhilarate her (and her companions) in equal measure.
Truly Stewart's gift lies in picking apart the tangle of plot and mystery and occasionally ludicrous action to get to the heart of his characters - and for that reason alone, this novel is a worthwhile read."
"A worthy sequel to the excellent start to this excellent series!
One of my favorite things about the series is that the characters are kind to each other for the most part.
One of my least favorite things about modern children's lit is that so many of the characters are filled with needless angst. They don't say things anymore; they scream them. They're often in an impossible position in which they alone can save the world, and they quickly morph from underdog kid heroes into brooding, emo babies.
I love that the kids of the MBS are real without being either perfect goody-two-shoes or completely selfish brats. I love that they develop as the series does -- Sticky struggles with pride in this book, and I thought it was refreshing that Reynie, instead of getting angry with him and telling him off, tries to control his anger because Sticky is his friend and he loves him.
I think this book sends an excellent message about the love between friends and that risking one's life isn't the only sacrifice worth making. Sometimes, it's harder to sacrifice the little things -- like telling your friend to shut it when he's acting like an arrogant jerk.
A solid effort -- I definitely plan to read the third book in the series when it comes out next month. I'll probably buy it for Jonathan Nah and then ask to borrow it when he's done."
"The follow up to the Mysterious Benedict Society is better than the first. The thoughts and feelings of Reynie Muldoon are not the sole focus of the narration and so the other characters are flushed out. The characters, especially Constance, are developing in a variety of ways (emotionally, intellectually, physically) that add depth. The plot line is not as good, but the chase the kids are led on is entertaining and interesting and my favorite thing about these books is that the reader can figure out the clues along with the kids. The adult interventions that happen in the book are well placed so the kids are able to be independent and competent at the same time that they are supported and cared for. I think this book contains good lessons about loyalty, support, leadership, and group process. And it's not perfect."
"This is the second mysterious benedict society and they are going on even crazier adventures. Mr.. Benedict has gone missing to find a plant called a dustwarth to cure his narcolepsy, and has left clues for the 4 children to follow him there. But when he is there he gets captured from his evil brother Ledropha Curtain and this dangerous team of Ten Men. When The children get this message and set of on the journey. Taking a crazy boat ride and going through the dangerous jungle of an island. The ten men aren't jets going to let the children wander around the island too of course. They get caught and they escape and get caught again but with help form friends they get home safely with the duskworth and Mr.. Curtain attacked my the navy. I can relate to this book with the series of unfortunate events series. In these series 3 kids go om outwardly adventures trying to escape from the terrible man who is after there money. This is like the Mr.. Benidictsociety because they go on crazy adventures to try to get rid of one man. I can also relate this book to Charlie and the chocolate factory because of all the crazy things that happen. I would rate this book 5 stars. I thought it was as good as the first book. It had a lot of suspense and craziness. They added a lot of fun new characters that I hope they will add to the third book. I would recommend this book to people who liked the peter and the star-cathers series. I can't wait for the third one to come out!"
