"The House in the Night, by Susan Marie Swanson, is comforting book that any child would enjoy as a bedtime story. In this story, Swanson names various nighttime objects that can be found around a house; such as a bed and a book. The main character, a little girl, explores objects in her house as she is preparing to go to bed. Children will be able to relate to her as she puts on her pajamas, reads a book, and is tucked in by her mother. While there are minimal words in the story, the reader is able to experience the comfort and homey feeling of the book through the incredible illustrations by Beth Krommes. Krommes black and white images, which are enhanced by a vibrant yellow. The pattern of this story was inspired by a poem called "This is the Key of the Kingdom."
I really enjoyed this story. I actually read it right before I was going to bed. I think that it is the mark of a truly great children's book if it can make an adult feel as if they too are a child again. I don't think that this book would have had the same effect if all of the images were in color. There was a calmness that I felt from the intricate black and white drawings from page to page. I wish that I taught a younger grade in order to incorporate this lovely tale into what I teach."
"Susan Marie Swanson writes The House in the Night which is inspired by the nursery rhyme beginning, "This is the key of the kingdom". The book begins with a young girl receiving a golden key to a house. Each page adds another piece that is within the page before. For example, "In the house burns a light... In that light rests a bed. The text continues simply as the girl opens a book with a bird inside and ends up taking a ride on that bird's back through the sky. She encounters the starry dark, the glowing moon, and the sun's rays reflecting on the moon. The story reverses leaving the girl back with the book in the bed... The beauty of this book comes with the artwork. The illustrations are scratchboard black and white with a bit of gold on each page. The use of specks of gold on each page adds just the right amount of light and draws the reader's eyes in. I especially enjoyed the particular objects the illustrator chose to highlight in gold. They seem to be things that actually shine in real life. Some examples of these are; the gold key, the dog's collar, light coming from houses, stars, and the sun's rays. These illustrations could lead to a discussion about why the illustrator may have chosen to color each of those particular objects in gold. Children might even use this same technique in their own artwork. This book is uniquely illustrator and fun to look at. Children ages 3-5 would especially enjoy it."
This Caldecott Medal award-winner sets poetic, easy-to-read text against a dark, scratch and watercolor background as the author describes various things found in the night. There are very few words on each page, making it a good choice for early readers, and the vocabulary repeats itself throughout the book. The mainly black and white illustrations include a bit of yellow on each page that corresponds to more challenging text, making it more accessible for beginning readers. The scratchboard illustrations of this book are a sharp contrast to the bright, colorful style found in many picture books, however there are intricate details to be found if the reader takes the time to look closely. It is also refreshing to find a book with "early reader" text written in such a poetic form."
"The house in the night Summary: This book is about things in and surrounding a house during the night. The text has one line per page and the story circles from the beginning to the end. Each item that is identified is then used on the next page so that all of the pages connect to each other. The illustrations are of black and white except for the shinning objects that are show in gold. This is a book that is perfect for bedtime reading for young readers. Reflection: The House in the Night is very simple in text but complicated in illustrations. The text is very minimal on each page, yet the illustrations say so much more then the text. Although the sentences are basic, the way that the book comes full circle is quite deep and interesting. I loved how the portion of the picture that was in the text was supported by the coloring of gold. This leads the reader or listener of the book to hear/read the vocabulary and the eye is automatically drawn to the visual support. I would like to use this with my students at the end of the day. There is a certain feeling of calmness to the book that I think my students could benefit from. The pictures allow the reader to jump right in and become part of the world at night."
