"A bit more than ok, but flawed. I got the twist before Bond did (at least I knew things weren't what they seemed) and I really felt that he'd have been dead long before Faulks got to him if he couldn't spot the obvious. That being said, I loved the trick of having a villan who could say so many truthful things about the British Empire and make it so clear what kind of world Bond actually worked in. There is a story that a BBC reporter first explained to Tony Blair who Mossadegh was and that the British having taken part in getting him deposed in a coup was probably the reason that the Iranians don't much trust the British. Blair probably isn't hte only one who is ignorant about that, but Seb does step in to save the day, telling the true story through Darius Alizadeh, a man that Bond respects and ends up owing his life to."
"As others have pointed out, Sebastian Faulks is the 4th author to carry on the Bond series since Fleming died: Kingsley Amis, John Gardner, Raymond Benson, and now Faulks. Gardner's novels had a character named James Bond, but the style was all wrong. Benson was closer, but still not quite right. Faulks has managed to capture much of the "Fleming Sweep" and style and may very well turn into the best "continuer" of the series. He shows great promise.
The best aspect of "Devil May Care" is the decision to go back to the 1960's and set Bond in the Cold War. It is OK to have the movie Bond move forward in time, as the movies (up to Casino Royale anyway) have long abandoned Fleming's stories and spirit. Movie Bond has a world all of his own. Literary Bond has a world too, and the Cold War is the best of that world.
The novel moves quickly and has interesting characters, new as well as from Bond's past. Rene Mathis and Felix Leiter are there, as they should be.
As much as I enjoyed it, I found it to be about one narrow escape and one villainous encounter too long. If Faulks hones his stories a little sharper, he will craft excellent Bonds.
There has been some criticism of the credit "Sebastian Faulks writing as Ian Fleming" as being pretentious. I suspect it was just to get the novel on bookstore shelves with the other Bond novels, rather than lost next to Faulkner."
"Still on my spy kick, I thought I'd give the new James Bond book, written by Faulks as Ian Fleming, a go. Not having read any Bond stories before, I wasnt sure what to expect. As a story, it was readable without gripping me. It had what I expected from a 007 story, a villian bent on destruction, a beatiful woman, a high class lifestyle and the inevitable Bond to the rescue. As for Faulks writing as Fleming, well again, it's impossible to assess without reading the originals. I can't say I felt Faulks nailed the character, it didnt necessarily feel like the Bond I know. Although I'm basing this on the films and not the original books. I would have preferred Faulks' take on Bond writing as himself, can't see the point having him write as Fleming. I guess the best way to judge the book is whether it's made me want to seek out any of the original series, but right now this is not high on my reading list! Overall, story was okay but I can't see it being adapted into film anytime soon."
"I enjoy the Bond series and am fan of Ian Fleming. Sebastian did such a phenomenal job at recreating the Bond mystique that I was hooked from the beginning. The writing style was smooth enough that I would lose track of the mechanical act of reading and become immersed in the story.
But I'm confused. Maybe i'm making too much of it but the novel is set during the days of the Vietnam war and there are quite a few references to Tehran being in Persia with not a single reference to Iran. Perhaps this is just the author's whim or perhaps it was common to refer to Persia in those days since Pahlavi declared that both could be used but when I try place the book into the Bond timeline, I simply can't...but perhaps I haven't tried hard enough. And the truth is, I probably won't.
If you are a Bond fan, do not miss this book. If you enjoy spy novels, do not miss this book. If you enjoy a good read...well, you know. ;-)
