"As women, we have all been in situations with other women where we were uncomfortable or didn't fit in. The main character, Cornelia, does a great job of using comedy to make light of certain situations that she comes across. It's one of those books where you can quickly make a connection with as you start reading. The theme of friendship and love permeates throughout this book, and the value it plays in each characters' life. I would highly recommend this book."
"Marisa de los Santos writes the way i could only dream of writing. She is realistic, down to earth, but eloquent and includes well researched references. She is so clearly a poet in her past life.
This book is about 'perfect' lives and family secrets and everything in between. My favorite aspect of her writing is how she can make you feel like you are her friend solely through her words; as if you are experiencing what is happening with her. My favorite part of the book is how right on she describes different relationships and how we could know someone for years, but not really know them; whereas we could know someone for minutes and feel as if in some way we've been connected to them our whole lives. I'm enamored by her writing. currently i'm reading her 1st book (which was a Christmas present) and I'm looking forward to her next one."
"What a sweet story... really, with nice poetic references and beautiful, loving people that don't exist anywhere but in books like this. So, yeah... of course, I hate them.. Mostly because I'm that woman... the urbanite who moved to the suburbs and I'm that woman longing for the security blanket that is estrogen-induced friendship. Of course I didn't have the hot doctor husband and the financial security and BA in Art History, But, you know... those are really just the perks of the story, not the meat... Anyway, lord knows I tried to (look for that bond, that is...stay with me, folks) but the women in my suburban setting do not quote from Cukor's The Women. (Or Hell, let's be real, the new version coming out will suffice.) They aren't interested in new relationships and they most certainly do not hold dinner parties... or, at least, none that I know of. So, forgive me if I snub my nose at this wispy Winona Ryder-esque Cornelia character (and I do that with the utmost respect to de los Santos as I really did like this book) because she achieves what I'm still waiting for 5 years out. I have to admit that this would make a great chick flick. I envision Nora Ephron and see an all star cast of Daniel Craig, Kiera Knightly, Kelly Ripa's husband (can he act? It doesn't matter.) and yes, maybe they CAN dig up Winona... I can't imagine that she's busy... Maybe they can get those Twilight kiddos to play the wise -beyond-their-years-14 year olds. I envision some great movie tie-ins from Corningware and Roche Pharmeceuticals...
I just re-read that and it sounds like I hated the book, I really didn't. Chock me up as bitter... And if you showed up at my door with a plate of cookies, I wouldn't necessarily turn you away, Winona.. honest."
"This is a book about how people become yours simply because you choose to love them. The characters are real individuals... so unique that their 3 dimensional qualities remind me of the writing of Charles Dickens. There isn't a sentence that comes out of the mouth of any of the characters that doesn't truly belong to them. Marisa de los Santos is so talented in her ability to express emotion and especially the elusive emotion of love that her writing made me want to weep and cheer at the same time. "When he looked up, he said, 'Clare told me about Christmas.' And I swear the boy's face began to shine. I recognized what I saw there; that a person's name could be infinitely precious, that just saying it could make you feel singled out for glory." My favorite passage is about when one of the characters is six years old. Everyone is swimming at the community pool, but she is afraid of the water and cannot join in. Her eight year old future husband comes up to her and says kindly, "you're missing the whole point of summer," and offers to teach her to swim. And, she talks about how his touch made her feel safe and how she learns to swim and then she says, "When I was no longer six years old, when I was a grown woman whose belief the possibility of safety, while far from shattered had suffered the inevitable hard hit or two, Teo's touch did not displace fear as absolutely as it once had. But it was still true that his skin on mine worked a kind of instant, inexplicable possibly chemical magic. When he touched me, the world fell into alignment -- a laying on of hands, a chiropractic of the soul-- the threat of drowning evaporated, and hope cast its light. I know this sounds dramatic, but what would you have me do about it? Some things are dramatic. Put it this way if you prefer; under Teo's touch, I could believe in happy endings. Or middles. Or beginnings." There are so many good books, but one of the qualities of great book, in my opinion, is one where the great beauty of the language and the truth of it makes you want to open your heart a little wider and be just a little better. So, if you're looking.. this is one of those rare books."
