"Is there anything more American than compiling an anthology of eco-literature that manages to be light on the literature and heavy on the paper wasting? Do yourself, your wallet, and the environment a favor - borrow or buy used the books compiled in this anthology in the original."
"Fantastic overview of American environmental writing. I really enjoyed it, but it is very long and certainly couldn't be considered a fast read. There's a mixture of fiction and nonfiction excerpts and essays, and while I didn't enjoy absolutely every piece in the book, the overall effect is really good."
"Bill McKibben has performed a great service to readers by compiling this very large collection of classic and contemporary essays on the environment. More importantly, he has compiled essays that span more than just the genre of "environmental writing", including as well important works from the Urban Social Justice Movement. In this way, he has broadened the spectrum of environmental activism. This is one more step in making the mainstream environmental movement more inclusive and focusing on more issues than preservation or conservation. By including voices from the Social Justice Movement, readers can think about questions regarding the environment less in an abstract sort of way, but more immediately and practically, as a matter pertaining to urban environments -- ecosystems that defy the "pristine" notions of what the term "environment" refers to. More than caring about biodiversity and "Nature" as an ideological trope, this collection pushes readers to ponder biosystems of all sorts. It is refreshing to read such a broad body of essays on our world and its inhabitants.
What I wish the book did more is include larger introductions to each piece, with more details as to how each essay fits into the overall context of the text. This would enhance the learning experience, particularly of readers who are not well-versed in this type of literature."
