The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 exerted a great cultural, religious and political impact, argues Shrady (Tilt: A Skewed History of the Tower of Pisa) in this revelatory volume. On November 1 (both a Sunday and All Saints' Day) at 9: 30 a.m., a titanic earthquake shattered the quiet, turning the pious city's packed houses of worship into crypts as their walls collapsed. "Interesting book about a topic that I was completely unaware of. The book discusses a devastating earthquake that hit Lisbon in 1755 and basically levels 80% of the city. I mostly read this book to learn something about Portugal and Lisbon, but it was interesting throughout and a quick read.
The events in the book became interesting because it was one of the first major natural disasters that hit an advanced country and was discussed around the world by other western European nations. It was interesting to hear both how it changed the course of Portugal as a country, and to a lesser degree the Catholic church and the Inquisition boards that were prevalent before the earthquake. In many ways this disaster came just as enlightenment philosophers were trying to come to a more scientific understanding of the world, and having such a gruesome disaster hit one of the, at the time, most religious cities in the world prompted a lot of western thinkers to question whether there really was a divine guide to life on earth.
All around a good read to learn more about Portugal."
"I read this book in preparation for my first trip to Portugal, a country that has been virtually invisible from history for several hundred years. The story of the quake and the nation's response was well told and quite interesting. The discussion of the political, social and economic context was even more thought provoking. It motivated me to do additional reading on Portuguese history, which collectively presents a disturbing case study of the impact of rigid religious and political dogmatism on the health of human society."
"Somewhere in a mental subprocess I wondered what happened to the Portuguese exploration powerhouse of the 17th and 18th centuries. Now I know. Huge earthquake followed by devastating tidal waves in 1755. Nearly every physical structure and maritime vessel in Lisbon was gone within a couple of hours. Economic, political, and social disaster.
Once the physical tremors and waves had gone, the cultural ripple-effect of the disaster gradually spread throughout Europe, affecting everything from public administration to philosophy. This is very readable history. Even if you don't read it in-depth, you can still learn a lot."
