"And so the Vampire Academy series continues... this time with book #2, Frostbite.
Rose and Lissa have both managed to make quite a recovery from the events at the end of Vampire Academy, and Rose no longer has to worry about Lissa's extreme moods pulling her (Rose) into her (Lissa's) head. Well, at least not her fear/anger moods... Lissa's experiences with her new boyfriend, Christian, on the other hand. Not something Rose wants to bear witness to. Everything seems pretty happy-go-lucky, but then a Strigoi attack happens not far from the school and puts everyone on high alert. The school is making its holiday trip to an Idaho ski resort mandatory for all students (damn, sucks to be them).
Rose is still fighting with her feelings for her mentor/trainer, Dimitri (who has feelings for her too), but he's made it pretty clear that they can't be together, so Rose turns (or attempts to turn) her attention to her fellow dhampir (and novice guardian in training), Mason. Once away from the school and in the presence of other dhampirs, guardians, and Moroi vampires - Rose has some fun. But then, after a meeting with older Moroi, guardians, etc - a fight breaks out about what should be done in retaliation to the Strigoi attacks, if anything at all. Dimitri tells Rose that they have a lead on where the Strigoi are hiding and in a momentary lapse of judgment (she has those quite often), Rose tells Mason.
Mason sets off with two other students to track the Strigoi, thinking that they can 'handle' them. Rose discovers the disappearance of her fellow students and with the help of Lissa's boyfriend, Christian, she follows the trio.
The end of the book has Rose facing two Strigoi vampires on her own and the outcome and its aftershock will send you reeling. I didn't want a book that would make me cry, but this one did. I have a feeling that this series is going to do that a lot. On to Shadow Kiss!"
"Rose Hathaway is a 17 year old child who is 6 months away from graduating from St. Vladamir's Academy. She's learning to be a guardian who protects Moroi, mainly her best friend Lissa Dragonmir, from Strigoi. Lissa's mother, father, & brother all died in a car accident which leaves Lissa as the last remaining heir the the Dragonmir Dynasty. The Dragonmir's are one of the 12 royal families that are the law makers for the Moroi's.
In Frostbite, Rose loses her tempter alot. Whether it be with her instructor (Dimitri), her mother (Jainie), Lissa's boyfriend (Christian), or her current semi-relationship interest (Mason), Rose is constantly on an emotional rollercoaster. In the long run, Rose being ill tempered, opens her mouth and says something she shouldn't say which get's everyone into this huge mess.
This book got me to laugh, cry, & constantly tell myself "no way, I don't believe this is happening." With every twist and turn in this book Mead keeps you wanting to turn the page to find out what happens next. Frostbite is the second installment in the Vampire Academy Series. I honestly didn't expect it to be as well written as it was. Not because of the author but just because there are very few series out there where the second book is better than the first. I enjoyed every minute reading this book & I can't wait to read Shadow Kissed."
"Okay, I thought this one was better than the first one. There was actually stuff going on! Weird how actual plot will help a book. I'm still iffy on most of the characters, and Rose is pretty annoying, but whatever. My one complaint is that this audiobook wasn't very high quality. It skipped back a lot, and it was not read by the same person as the first one. Normally, I wouldn't care, except that Mead uses a lot of made-up words in her books, and they were all pronounced differently. Even one of the characters got a differently pronounced name -- in the same book. Is that chick Mia or Maya? Mya? I have no idea, but it took me a long time to figure out who the hell the narrator was talking about.
Anyway. I want fic for these books. That's pretty much the nicest thing I can think of to say. But come on, there's awesome BFF bitey femmeslash, and there is dirtywrong mentor sex, and boarding school hijinks sex, and I think my mom sometimes looks at my goodreads so I will not talk about the other things I want to read, but there is a lot!
Man, I write really great reviews. I did enjoy learning more about Rose's mother and their relationship. And I also enjoy that Rose rarely needs saving, and in this book, when she did need saving, another chick saved her. I feel like the books are a bit heavy handed with the Important Life Lessons about alcohol and cutting and depression and not being a cocktease, but I will get over it."
"A thrill to read. As the saying goes, if you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with. For Rose Hathaway, it wasn't such an easy choice.
Frostbite, the second book of the Vampire Academy series picks up where the first book left off. It begins with Rose and Dimitri driving off to meet up with a legendary Dhampir named Arthur Schoenberg. Rose being a trainee guardian; was scheduled to take her qualifying field test with the famed Strigoi slayer as her appointed judge, but when they reached their destination they discover a scene of a ghastly Strigoi attack.
With the discovery that the Strigoi are targeting Vampire Royals, Saint Vladimir's Academy is on red alert. You'd think Rose had enough things to worry about. Problem 1: Her duty to protect her best friend Lissa (the last of the Dragomir royal line), whom she shares a bond with. A bond that allows her to experience what Lissa is feeling, which can be quite awkward now that she is constantly with her boyfriend, the snarky Christian Ozera. Problem 2: Rose has to stifle her feelings for her tutor, Dimitri, who seems to be falling into the arms of Tasha Ozera (Christian's aunt). Problem 3: Her friend Mason, wants to be more than just friends. On top of all that, she gets an unsuspected surprise when her famous Dhampir mother shows up to add more chaos to her already full plate.
With the Strigoi at large, and Christmas vacation drawing near, the school sends everyone to an exclusive Moroi ski lodge to ensure the safety of the students and their families. It seems like the perfect vacation for Rose till she meets the man of her dreams (in a matter of speaking) Adrian Ivashkov, the Don Juan of Moroi royalty. Trouble ensues as Rose discovers that she inadvertently caused Mason (her admirer) to race off with two companions in tow, hell-bent on revenge against the Strigoi who attacked the royals.
With a series of comical jealously fits, glimpses of erotic experiences, drunken moments, fast-paced action, suspense, and some teen drama thrown in, FrostBite proves to be a winning sequel."
