"I have to admit that this book became more interesting in the later sections, though I still can't say that I liked it. The biggest problem was the unrealistic narration. The story is told by 4 generations of a family -- when each character is 6 years old. And ok, fine, these are some smart 6-year-olds, but even extremely smart 6-year-olds don't talk like that. The first section, narrated by Sol (who speaks as if he's a middle-aged lunatic planning to overtake the world) was so over the top that I couldn't help but picture him as Stewie from "The Family Guy" while I was reading..."
"This book is really well written. It tells the story of 4 generations of a family, starting in modern times with Sol who is a freaky, precocious and spoiled 6 year old and goes back to tell the story of his dad, his grandmother and finally his great-grandmother who was part of a program called Lebensborn (fountains of life) whereby the Nazis stole hundreds of thousand of Aryan looking European children from neighboring Poland and the Ukraine and re-educated them and then settled them with German families. That part was fascinating and is supposed to explain why Sol was who he was."
"I can't decide whether I really liked this book or not. It tells a family history of 4 generations going from the present to the past. The story is very interesting and I also love WWII stories. The problem I had was the story of each generation is told from the perspective of a 6 year old and I had a hard time believing a young child with think and articulate like it is written. But, I'm sure looking at my 6 year old grandson and wanting to get inside his mind. I was very familiar with "Lebensborn" as a very sad part of Norwegian history but was not aware of all the stolen children from Poland the Ukraine. But, I'm glad I read it."
"A backward chronology of an aspect of the holocaust of which I wasn't aware, told by each generation of the family during their sixth year of life. Each six year old has a somewhat naive view of adult things happening around them, save Sol. His chapter (the opening) made me think of him as the poster child for monitoring your child's internet, television and video use. Disturbing as all getout. But not, I'm afraid, far from the truth. What's really interesting is that a lot of the pornography, hate, violence, fear and bigotry he finds on the internet his grandmother, to a degree, dealt with in real life and real time. This book has so many layers to explore I read it twice. Huston's layering of the different times is unique and compelling. This book will stay with me a long time. Force yourself to get through Sol's section (the present) and you'll be glad you did by the time you finish his grandmother's tale."
