About this title: The eponymous hero of Colette's CHERI is the son of a sophisticated and well-to-do Parisian prostitute. Raised in the trade, as it were, he is groomed to become a gigolo, and he falls in love with Léa, an older woman of fragile beauty and fading charm who is a friend of his mother. However, he is fated to marry the naïve daughter of a wealthy and socially prominent family. In THE LAST OF CHERI, we discover the fate of Chéri, and of Léa, in an unexpected ending to a poignant story that manages to be both tender and cynical--quintessential Colette.

"This was a very interesting read, particularly after seeing the movie - it gave the book life as I"m not sure I couled have totally imagined the early 1900s dress, style, homes, etc. This was translated from the French so I wonder if some of the nuances were lost, but is a good tale of the life a young man who is floundering in his life following a long affair with a much older woman (played by Michelle Pfeiffer) in the movie. I'm not sure I'd read anything else by Collette, but was glad I had the opportunity to read this great period piece."
