In search of a place to call home, thousands of Hmong families made the journey from the war-torn jungles of Laos to the overcrowded refugee camps of Thailand and onward to America. But lacking a written language of their own, the Hmong experience has been primarily recorded by others. Driven to tell her family's story after her grandmother's death, "The Latehomecomer" is Kao Kalia Yang's tribute to the remarkable woman whose spirit held them all together. It is also an eloquent, firsthand account of a people who have worked hard to make their voices heard.

"Halfway through this book I decided that it should be required reading for any non-Hmong person who lives in the Twin Cities/western Wisconsin or in California's central valley--any place where the large numbers of Hmong families have resettled. I later found out it is required reading this year for the incoming class at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. I learned a lot about the incredible struggles faced by the Hmong during and after the Secret War in Laos. The writer's voice is clear and lyrical. She is able to capture her experience as a child, born in a refugee camp, whose parents and grandparent underwent immense suffering while trying to find safety and stability for their children. She also beautifully conveys her childhood experience in the Thai refugee camps and her family's resettlement in St Paul, Minnesota--how necessary her family bonds were for their survival and, as many immigrants know, how incredibly hard they worked to provide for their families. I couldn't put this book down and highly recommend it."
"This book truly is amazing. It teaches us how all the Hmong people came to America. I am Hmong myself and have never discovered all the troubles that Kao Kalia and her family went through. It teaches me alot of my culture since Hmong kids these days don't even know that much about our culture. After reading this book, I felt very greatful for my elders who led us into America. They went through so much trouble just to get here in America. I have to be very greatful because we haven't seen all the pain they went through. Walking through the woods with no shoes for weeks while your so hungry. I don't think people these days can even survive in that condition. It's just the horrible war. The small war. We Hmong don't have a country. That's why we aren't well known in some parts of the cities. This book was the first Hmong book I've ever read and it really touched me. Very heart-warming. I'll shelter this book forever and when I have my kids they can read it! :)"
"This is the first book I have read by a Hmong author and I found it very insightful. This autobiography traces the author's early experiences in Laos, Thailand and her family's immigration to America. Family ties are supreme in Hmong clans, which sometimes makes them unpopular with their fellow Americans, but, after reflecting on their harrowing past, I can see why they would value a strong family base. While I don't wish for the terrors of their past, I do think we would all fare better if we learned to value family in the way of the Hmong people. A great read, especially for those who read the fascinating book, "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down"."
"This is a tremendously moving memoir of a Hmong family's emigration and settlement in the US, told by its second oldest daughter. The family shows overwhelming courage, loyalty and honor as it navigates the Mekong river, Thai refugee camps, US airports and St. Paul MN housing projects. Kao Kalia Yang is quite accomplished, and the reader sees her accomplishment as the natural expression of her family's values, once she is given access to American education. If you still want to believe in the American dream, this is a wonderful book to read."
