Seeds are buried in the skin of several people. The seeds cause a terrible itching, then progress to more severe symptoms, including causing a paranoia so intense it causes the victims to kill everyone around them and then themselves. The seeds are actually blueprints for creatures and humans are the incubators. As the seeds mature, eventually forming triangles to form on the skin, they start to communicate with the host. One of the main characters is a victim of the seeds and the horror comes from knowing he has parasites in side him that will likely kill him when they hatch.
Meanwhile, a small (two person) team of epidemiologists have to figure out if the seeds are part of a bioterrorist attack, and if so, who has technology advanced enough to carry it out."
"I've listened to this book by Scott Sigler and if you hadn't heard it you don't know what you're missing. I'm sure the book is still a good read as a text, but hearing Scott's voices for the characters are so stereotypical and often funny. He reads the story with such emotion that it draws you in, really conveys the mood of the story. He's the only author that I can honestly say listening to the audio versions are better than reading the written versions.
This story really surprised me becasue I am not one to listen to sci-fi but this had my attention and I am looking forward to catching up with the rest of the story in his next book (audio version, of course) Contagious.
Warning: This is not a story for the squeamish. Totally worth checking out."
"Good book, very interesting and a great page turner.
People are turning into psychotic killing machines with an odd rash...and talking about the Triangles. Black op government agents are trying to track this down and find out who (or what) is causing it, and a retired college football player is fighting it on a much more personal level.
The author's descriptive skills are amazing. He describes every bit of Perry's infestation and his battle for his own body, sanity, and very life with excruciating detail.
This book is not for the weak stomached, though. It's got to be in the top 5 of the Grossest Books I've Ever Read list, if not number one. And if you have a tendency to internalize this sort of story (ie, get the flu after reading The Stand by Stephen King or develop severe itch fests after Dust by Pellagrino) I'd suggest skipping it."
"Combines ideas from Parasite Rex, delusional parasitosis (and Morgellons), Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Cronenberg's old body horror flicks, and I guess a medical thriller? I was giggling and cringing throughout half of this book, and that's the half I liked; the medical thriller half felt more generic, and since the chapters alternate between the two storylines, I spent too much of the time reading impatiently in the hopes that we'd get back to Perry's ongoing battle with his body. Definitely NOT for the squeamish, although it's quite an experience to read if you're a hypochondriac or you get really freaked out by parasites.
Oh, it's also the only book I've read where being severely beaten as a child by your drunken, abusive father is a *good* thing, as far as increasing your chances for survival.
I was less interested in the ending, partly because it went sci-fi in a way that made me feel the sequel (Contagion) wouldn't be as focused on body horror."
