Diamond Willow

by Helen Frost

About this title:

"There's
""more to me than
""most people
""see."

Twelve-year-old Willow would rather blend in than stick out. But she still wants to be seen for who she is. She wants her parents to notice that she is growing up. She wants her best friend to like her better than she likes a certain boy. She wants, more than anything, to mush the dogs out to her grandparents' house, by herself, with Roxy in the lead. But sometimes when it's just you, one mistake can have frightening consequences . . . And when Willow stumbles, it takes a surprising group of friends to help her make things right ... read more

"When I first picked up this book I thought it was a very strange layout. Students love free verse novels but I was concerned that this layout would be difficult for them to follow. But once I started reading the book I realized that your eye just follows the lines automatically and the little hidden messages in each poem only added to your understanding of the story. So often we say when you listen to someone you have to hear what is not being said as well as what is and that is exactly what is going on here."

"This is pretty interesting, to read the reviews and see that the text is written in diamante poems. I listened to it on audio and while I wanted to love it, I didn't. However, after hearing that it won the Lee Bennett Hopkins poetry award, I think I need to take another look. Might the style and physical appearance of the text on the page impact the story that much? or did the audio recording detract from the understanding of the text?

The answer to the question above is yes, the style has a huge impact on the understanding of the text and so no, audio is not recommended. More importantly than the diamante form, which itself supports the theme, is that there is a second meaning, just a few bolded words within each poem, that reveals Willow's true 12-year-old self, yearning to be understood and appreciated for who she is. I'm a little less enamored of the deus ex machina - ancestors reincarnated into animal helpers - but then, I do appreciate the chance to use that phrase outside of h.s. English class."

"I hadn't heard anything about this book until it was selected as the Mitten Award Winner. I immediately placed it on hold. When I saw the format I knew it would be a quick read, but I didn't realize how good it would be! Most of the text is written in various diamond shapes. Within this text are bolded words forming a "hidden message". These I found to be the most strong messages! Interspersed throughout are "chapters" in the voices of renincarnated family members (as animals watching over Willow and other characters). These two concepts were an interesting way to tell a story. Even though there are flaws in the actual story (there doesn't seem to be any consequences to Willow's actions), they didn't bother me because of the unique and emotional way it is told. To simply say it is a story about a girl's desire to rescue her beloved dog is to not give it justice."

"I loved this. It seems that I have become a sucker for prosey books written in non-traditional forms like this (Witness, Heartbeat, etc.), and I am definitely a sucker for well done growing pains and identity searching. I just get a feeling in my heart and want to hug the poor girl. I enjoyed the little mystical aspect of the plot and was surprised when it became more relevant. I liked the things Willow learned, much of the language, the whole diamond willow metaphor, etc. but really the rating is an emotional one. The book necessarily moves fast as the unique format dictates, so the yearning feelings are a little obvious/heavy handed...but to me it ends up not mattering. I just think books like this capture little pieces of the human experience, are beautiful, and make people who read them a little better. And that may be my most cheesy review. =)"
