"Interestingly, for some reason, I like the books in this series that feature vampires the LEAST. And this one is probably the one I like least of even those. This is about the 3rd Wroth brother, those Estonian warlord vampires from the 17th century who keep turning up (the 4th brother is featured in the latest installment, which I have yet to read)... it's not terrible. There is just something missing here, perhaps because there is not even a Valkyrie in it to make it interesting. Bowen and Mariketa make appearances, as well as obviously the other Wroth brothers and their wives (Kaderin, Myst). But it just didn't do it for me quite as well as some of the other books, namely those with Lykae as main characters!"
"Kresley Cole's latest book will satisfy your 'Dark Needs' for a great paranormal romance
In case you were worried when you heard that Cole's heroine was a ghost, fear no more.
Cole makes the relationship work gloriously, allowing the connection between Néomi, the murdered ballerina, and Conrad Wroth, a violently insane vampire assassin to develop slowly and believably even though we can quickly see how each fulfills the other's emotional needs. Néomi, who was an outgoing social and vivacious person in life, finally finds hope of someone to end her years of loneliness spent as a ghost as Conrad appears to be able to see her. For Conrad -- imprisoned in Néomi's home by the brothers who hope to somehow bring Conrad back from the madness caused by 300 years of evil memories gained by drinking the blood of Conrad's vile victims -- Néomi at first seems to be just a vision induced by his madness but later she becomes the catalyst to lead Conrad back to sanity as Néomi's mere presence brings him a measure of peace.
I won't spoil this for you by dropping hints as to how Cole manages to even offer hope for a happily ever after for these two, other than to say that if you think that fact that Conrad isn't blooded and can't touch Néomi in anyway lessens the ability for Cole to build desire between them, you will be pleasantly surprised at the level of steaminess she manages. Apart from the star-crossed lovers, Cole makes use of much of her cast from previous books. Conrad's brothers Nicolai (from Cole's short "The Warlord Want Forever" from Playing Easy to Get) and Sebastian (from No Rest for the Wicked (The Immortals After Dark, Book 2)) are on hand and witch Marika and her mate Bowen (from Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night (The Immortals After Dark, Book 3)) along with vakyrie seeress Nix, who is pulling the strings in the larger plot, all play a significant role here. Cole also does a bit of set up with demon brothers Cade and Rydstrom (also from 'Wicked Deeds') to get us ready for her next book.
Fortunately for us now that Cole has satisfied our 'Dark Needs' we don't have long to wait until she fulfils our 'Dark Desires' for Cade's story,Dark Desires After Dusk (The Immortals After Dark, Book 5), which will be out shortly -- and she has left a few other gorgeous immortal hunks waiting in the wings to claim their mates so with luck we'll be seeing a lot more from Cole in the future."
""This mountain of a man was learning that his considerable might- which he'd clearly relied on for everything- was futile with her. "
This fifth story in the Immortals After series by Kresley Cole was a sweet read. In all senses of the word. This time we get to see Conrad Wrath (gotta love those Estonian brothers) a blood crazed vampire and Néomie Wrath, a ghost who's been trapped in her old house for eight decades, fall in love.
Conrad and Néomie' s personalities couldn't be further apart. He has been dutiful throughout his existence, denied himself the pleasures of life and therefore forgot to live, both in his life and afterlife. Néomie however lived her life to the fullest and indulged in anything it had to offer.
When Conrad gets locked up in the house where Néomie was murdered over 80 years ago, they find out he is the only one who can see her. Néomie is glad to have finally found some one she can communicate with. Conrad however thinks he's losing his mind (even more). Slowly but surely he finds out Néomie is the only one who can sooth him. And learns a ghost can teach him the pleasures in life and make him want to actually live.
Seeing Conrad and Néomie's relationship grow from tentative to sizzling was wonderful. Conrad was the perfect mix of Lachlain and Sebastian Wroth: a tad crazy, very overbearing but sweet as hell (and a virgin too!). Néomie was his perfect counterweight.
We also got to see a little bit of the Woede brothers, met up with Mariketa and Bowen, caught a glimpse of Regis and saw the wonderfulness that is Nïx (hilarious as always).
"This was an excellent book! I loved the characters , the story and especially the "romance" and by romance I mean hot sex. Basically the story was a about a girl, Neomi, who was a ballerina and she gets murdered by her ex fiance in her own home. Her spirit is bound to the home where she has roamed now for the past 80 years. In comes Conrad, an evil vampire assassin whose brothers chain him up in the home in an attempt to free him from his controlling bloodlust. It's basically a vampire intervention. His brothers tell him that the only way he can fully break free of his bloodlust is if he finds his Bride and becomes Blooded by her. This means that he finds his soulmate and her love causes his body to become alive again basically. He gets a heartbeat, he breathes and his blood flows through his body again. This means that before becoming blooded a vampire has no blood running thru his body meaning certain body parts don't function...as they should. This is where I fell in love with the story. Since Conrad was not Blooded, in his 300 years of being a vampire he has never been with a woman! 300 year old virgin. Adorable. So now with Conrad in her home Neomi goes along with her usually ghostly antics but something is different this time. Conrad can see and hear her! There is something drawing them to each other and they don't really understand it. The story then is about them discovering their love for each other and what that means for them. Wonderful book and can't wait to read more from this series."
